Do you know anyone that doesn't have a computer?

Quite a few, but they are folks in their 80s and 90s. One was a woman I delivered meals to and we got talking about that. She said she wouldn't have one in her house. Another man, but in his middle 60s said he had Internet, but gave it up. It cost too mcuh for what use he got out of it.

Some of the older mom & pop stores don't do computerized stuff. Plus I know several elderly folks who don't own a computer. They have smart phones. I'm in for a real learning curve when I get my first smart phone because I'm clueless at using those things.

Thanks for bring up the smartphone issue. It astounds me that people actually watch movies on a 4" square screen. Lately I see people swiping their smartphones at store cash registers, not like a credit card swipe but they kind of put the smartphone up against the cash register. I heard stories of people almost having nervous breakdowns and panic attacks over losing these phones because their whole life is in them. Another thing too is if the nationwide cell system crashes America will stand completely still because nobody thinks to have a landline phone even though the service is provided in every cable and satellite bundle package. Go figure.

Oh yeah, for sure. I know some people who don't even own a car or a landline. In my apartment complex, there are some people who don't have a computer but have cell phones. And some of them do not use the cell phone for social media or paying bills.........just for making telephone calls........imagine that!

Landlines are too expensive. I don't even have a place in my apt to plug one in. There's a rotted out line running to the house but I don't know where it is. LOL! I guess if the system goes down I'll just have to do without.

But you're right...if the entire system should ever crash...we're in trouble as a societal whole. Especially if they decide to go cashless.

I've noticed that if you want to get in touch, say for example something said on the radio or TV, they no longer give a postal address but give you email, twitter etc. What amuses me (I know it shouldn't) but when computers have 'gone down' people have resorted to pen and paper.
I use technology but I wonder how different generations will cope if the technology fails. I recently wrote a cheque and almost forgot the format, added to that I had to think how to write my signature as it's not often used nowadays. Just some thoughts ☺

A man that I grew up with, now age 86 was an electronics technician during his working years, does not own a computer. Our communications are Christmas cards from a distance of 1200 miles.

My 91 year old sister retired her computer.

I've see that many of my neighbors have cellphones. When I lived in a community in Maine, I let it be known that I was available for computer help. I got a few people who said they maybe had Windows 98 (this was in 2006). My best advice for them was to buy a new computer. In recent years, I've tried to help my 92 year old Dad with his computers. He ignores at least half my advice, then gets hit with the consequences (computer ransom notes, whatever). He continues to fight me whenever I try to help. Sometimes it takes days or weeks for the simplest things.... I told him I've retired.
Even the best get the ransom notes, whatever. It's not limited to old systems. I am still running Windows XP on my big under the desk computer and I don't have any anti virus programs installed anymore. I'm just tired of the Microsoft games changing operating systems and I can't upgrade my computer to Windows 10. So I'll just wait to see what happens. I don't have anything on there that I'm worried about losing. I did have the ransomware virus a few years back but was able to beat it without any special help. I get more crap on my new cell phone than enough. Actually I can't blame him because the learning curve is really hard to learn. They don't label anything anymore. It's all icons. That's crap as far as I'm concerned.

Go Linux and never depend on WiFi. Only use ethernet cables.

Linux has a bit of a learning curve but it's worth it's weight in gold since it's open source.

My Brother's father in law never had a computer....He is 96 years old....
I have a computer and so does my husband....He had computer's when probably some here weren't even born....hahaha!!!!
That was starting when he was 20 years old. He now is 75 years old, yesterday...

My neighbor doesn't. And she's at my house 4 or 5 times a week, wanting to use my computer to look something up or buy something. I asked why she doesn't just buy one, and she said they're too expensive. I even offered her my old laptop, which still runs just fine, but she said she can't afford internet service.

I guess I'd be more sympathetic to her claims of financial woes if she wasn't always ordering junk online...clothes she never wears, gadgets and costume jewelry and such. She buys all of those "As Seen On TV" products.

Oh boy. Instead of just answering the question, I turned this into a rant. Sorry:oops:

Movies on a 4" screen? Well I'm in the process of trying to hook up my cell phone to the smart t.v. so I can watch movies on it.
I talked about it in another thread.

I have thought about it many times but never got around to it. The cell phone is my cheapest option right now. These days a cell phone is more like a computer than a phone. It's a camera with a built in computer. And now, just about everywhere you go Wi Fi is available. My cell phone company has put in Wi Fi just about everywhere I shop.
Young girl used to come in the coffee shop every morning and update everything on the Wi Fi available at high speed.
I'm hoping they put Wi Fi on the buses. I know they have in New York. Very easy to make connections.

Yes-and define computer.I have zero computers.Got three iPads.
One of them is permanently connected to the TV
