Do you know the names of people where you shop?

Grampa Don

Yep, that's me
At the market I go to there's a young lady checker who always seems glum. She never smiles and hardly looks at customers. I noticed her name is Shannon, and the next time I checked out I said "Good morning Shannon." It kind of startled her, like "Do I know this old man?". Then she gave me a big smile. Now I get a smile every time.

I think people like to be recognized as another human and not just a clerk. My wife loved going to the market. She knew everyone; the manager and even the people stocking the shelves, and they knew her. She would joke with them and occasionally even get a hug. And, she got super service.

I'm an introvert, and it takes real effort for me to speak to strangers. But, I'm trying to do better at it.

We have been dealing with the same G.M. dealership in Mississauga for over 20 years. The service department guy we always talk to is Marco, who has been employed there for 26 years now. He knows both of us by name, and we trust him to be honest and fair in how he treats us. Our next service appointment will be November the 13th to swap the summer tires and rims to the winter tires and rims, plus do an oil and filter change, replace the cabin air filter, and do a visual check of the brakes, steering, lights and fluids. Our 2012 Sonic is just rolling over the 100 thousand kilometer mark ( 63,000 miles ) so obviously we don't drive very much per year.

My Wife and I both use the same lady for haircuts, at a shop 5 minutes walk from our house. My previous Barber retired a few years ago and moved back to France . JIM.

I always read a checker's name tag while they're scanning my stuff so that I can say "Thank you, Kyle" or whatever as I leave. It does seem to make their day a little better.

But I hardly ever actually remember their names. The place where I shop has new checkers almost every time I go in.

Haven't been ableto memorize any of their names. Too focused on avoiding them overcharging me, or else charging me and then claiming that I didn't hand them the money after I did, or else slipping merchandise under the counter after charging me for it.

We know the names of most of our Kroger cashiers and we go a little later in the morning to be sure our favorite is there with her register opened. The self-check makes us stabby.
