Do You Know/Use Ashwagandha? I Have a Question or Two

When I searched to see if this has been discussed before, I see @Murrmurr mentioned using it for tea. But I have the capsules and by golly, they're helping this 15-year insomnia veteran get an extra 40-50 minutes of sleep and giving a nice calm feeling throughout the day.

So anyhow, I just saw at WebMD that around 600mg is the general amount that's suggested. But my capsules are 1300 and I need to know if there are dangers with taking so much. It also said it's not for long-term use which is also a disappointment. I'm asking for personal experience, not medical advice... I'll probably bring it up to doc, but he'd rather prescribe all kinds of garbage I don't want to take... I prefer herbal or supplement.

If that dosage isn't giving you an upset stomach, then it isn't too much. But if you're worried, take it every other day, or skip taking it once or twice a week and then buy a lower dose next time.

When I went to our Naturopath Doctor , I was recommended this for anxiety and panic attacks. I use this along with Lions Mane mushroom concentrated powder alternatively and it is working better than taking antidepressants. Plus I finally got off the sleeping pills I was prescribed. I’d built up an immunity and couldn’t sleep without them, then was groggy during the day.
I prefer this.

Sorry but I don’t know the answer to how much is right for you.

Thank you! No, not upsetting stomach. I bought it when I heard that it works so well for some people, and foolishly assumed that Amazon wouldn't be selling doses that were too high. Well that's good to know. What about the "not for long-term use"? Just a standard disclaimer? @Murrmurr

I believe so. You might look up whether or not it can accumulate in the liver, though.

Thanks, @PeppermintPatty . I haven't heard of Lions Mane powder, but you can be sure I'm going to check it out. ā˜ŗļø

It’s certainly worth checking out. When I first started taking Ashwagandha I believe it was 300 mg. capsules twice a day. Now I have powdered stuff and use it occasionally in cooking Which is what I do with the mushrooms too. It’s incorporated into what I eat. Tablets and pills can sometimes upset my stomach too.

I bought this for my husband for sleep ,and it upset his stomach and made him nauseous. Since I had taken it years ago, I tried it and have been using it around once a week for sleep, no bad side effects. I also bought him a bottle of Natrol Relaxia with the same ingredient, both prodocts are melatonin-free.

I'm going through some eye surgery now, so I don't take any supplements except for the eye. I don't know if this may thin the blood, and that is bad for any surgery, as some other supplements may do.

I also use melatonin-free Pure Zzzzs, which is just a combination of herbs like Valerian, Passionflower, etc. I also use Deep Sleep herbal supplement with Poppy seed. All of these work pretty well for me. I don't take any prescription meds, and I choose to go the more natural route for sleep, etc. I will take a half tablet of a Unisom type pill when I want to sleep better all night, it is an anti-histamine. I only use half.

I don’t use it and never pay attention to it. In a speak-of-the-devil moment, I just saw an ad in the Costco Canada magazine. Webber naturals has 3600 mg capsules. 120 vegetarian capsules. I see that company also sells 7200 mg capsules.

I tried it years ago. I never noticed any results, positive or negative. I got off of anti-depressants (years ago) and use the homeopathic stuff for calming ( doesn't fix my depression but is better than the side effects of anti-depressants ). The sleep products available never helped until I found Valerian Root. Just makes it easy to fall asleep. But the best part of VR is that if I get up in the middle of the night for something I can go right back to sleep. And the cats go nuts over it. I shake the bottle and they come running. I finally found some catnip mixed with Valerian Root for them.

Have you ever tried homeopathic stuff called ā€˜Rescue Remedy?’

I will look for it the next time I get out. Thanks @PeppermintPatty . I looked up some info and it said "It's said to help stabilize your emotions, or at least let you cope with what's happening more effectively". I like the sound of that.
