They had their genesis in 1970.
They sold over 50 million records worldwide, collecting 19 CRIA, 21 RIAA, and 38 BPI awards. They were known in the US, as "the English guys with the big fiddles". From 1972 to 1986, ELO accumulated twenty Top 20 songs on the UK Singles Chart, and fifteen Top 20 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100. The band also holds the record for having the most Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hits (20) without a number one single of any band in US chart history. ELO was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

I thought they were ok. I went to one of their concerts, music was fine, but I was disappointed because that particular venue didn't have enough interior room for them to use most of their visual stage show. It was a good time, pretty much any concert at that time in my life was a good time.

I really like Jeff Lynne and all the front guys that play the instruments. They sound great together. I also liked Rosie Langley over Mik Kaminski. She’s mush better to look at.

As an adult I don't care for their over produced sound. I just as soon skip it.

I did very much like the instrumental, Daybreaker, because it was more orchestral which was more in keeping with the band's name.

I remember a guy in high school telling me a story about how he got backstage at a concert where ELO, who was not yet big, was the opening act. He said these guys aren't big yet but they will be. I was intrigued by the band's cool name and I had an album by them while in high school.

He got backstage by being dressed in a sport coat and tie and pinning his high achool picture ID card to his lapel and walking like he knew where he was going.

We were either freshman or sophmores at the time but he had an older look.
