Just yesterday, I finished binge watching the original Dexter Series for the 10th time. Talk about coincidence. I only do that once a year. I'm so totally fascinated by it that I bought a whole series and had it shipped to a movie watching friend. Big mistake! He and I have very different tastes, but I used to try to get him interested in things outside his limited but not understandable tastes in film. He told me he couldn't get through the first disk because he didn't like it.
I get it. How could an eight season series about a serial killer be anymore than a feast of blood, gore, and a haphazard investigation of a twisted mind? Well, that's what you think it will be if you only watch the first half of the first episode. Now I don't want to sell this series to anyone, but the killing part, which is it is bloody intense I admit, is actually a smaller part of the drama. Yes, there's more, like very intense romance, friendship, bonding, unbonding, and a cast of characters who may not kill, but some who are willing to totally destroy anyone else's life for their own gain. There's a lot of psychological investigation going on and is not limited to Dexter.
Sometimes I think the writers take a lot of liberty. We get to kind of understand what drives Dexter, but is it an accurate description of how such a person thinks? Maybe, but who can understand that kind of thinking in the first place? During the episodes, I find myself both cheering and booing different characters. I'm continually on the edge of my seat, even when I know what's going to happen.
I like unique scripts, and this one is far outside the common formula for crime and mystery drama.
