Do You Like Lentils?

Jmo, lentils are yummy. Lentil soup is easy and healthy. They’re high fibre, which is good for everyone. Basically, soup was the only way I used them. Recently I wondered why I wasn’t cooking them up for other meals. I had paid $2+ for a can that I was adding here and there to salads. The other day I bought green and brown for $2 a bag. I cooked up 1 cup of a mix of green, brown, and red and ended up with a huge bowl of about 4 cups worth. I did them with a dried vegetable blend and shallots. Easy, peasy and delicious. I’m using them as a side dish with dinner.

I've enjoyed lentils since I was a child and still do. My grandmother routinely cooked lentil soup and used lentils in salads.

I keep these on hand for a quick, no-fuss meal over polenta or rice. Costco has an eight-pack available.

NO. All of my kids do, though. I will likely start eating them anyway. I found out, with oatmeal, that if I eat something daily for a few weeks, I no longer hate it with a passion. It is palatable after that. But I'm never, never going to try that with grits or okra or turnip greens.

I determine whether I will like something by smelling it. I determine whether more spices need to be adding to whatever I'm cooking by smelling it. The only time that failed me was with tomatoes. They are among my top five favorite foods, but I was 50 before I discovered that I didn't hate them.

No. Had them when I lived in a flat with other students where we cooked for each other. One girl made em. It was not like yummy. It had a peculiar taste. I rather eat brown beans. Maybe if you have a great recepy, but just like that cooked with a bunch of gravy neh. She also added millet instead of potatoes or rice. Millet. My birds loved it, but I'm not a fan.

I'm not crazy about them. I never had them until I was totally an adult so it might be one of those things you had to grow up with.

I did read that the red were more tasty than the brown. Those I need to try.

I eat lentils occasionally, to see if my opinion of them has changed. It hasn’t. I don’t like them. 😟

That said, Ron’s been doing a lot more cooking since his diagnosis, and lentils is on his list of foods that fight cancer, so I’m expecting that there will be another chance or two in the near future to see if I like them any better. 😉

And if you don't find them any tastier, what are you going to tell him?

Oh he already knows I don’t much care for lentils, but I’m not a picky eater. If he’s going to the trouble of making dinner, I’m certainly going to eat what’s put in front of me! I’ll be honest when I tell him how they compare to other lentils I’ve eaten

One of easiest ways to see if you like lentils is by buying a can of soup or going to a small cafe that is or tends towards being vegetarian. Amy’s, though pricey, has good lentil soups. In Canada, we have Sprague. I’m sure there are many others. I make my own.

It's crazy, I can't even tell you now what it was I didn't like. Texture? I can be stubborn when it comes to not liking the texture of something. I know it wasn't the lack of flavor since over 90% of my cooking is Mediterranean which means loads of spices.
