I have had plenty of experience of workmen who are unreliable and fail to turn up. It is infuriating when you ensure to be at home, plan your day accordingly.
However, I am now wise enough to listen to my sixth sense when something seems wrong. I fixed with a nice professional sounding one to come do a job. On the day I was very surprised when he didn't come. I waited the day then left just one short courteous message. I didn't chase further because I had a firm feeling there must be a good reason. My husband said forget him, find someone else but I said wait.
Sure enough, a few days later he called. His partner had died suddenly and he was deeply shocked, unable to work for now. I of course expressed condolences and said he can call me to fix a day when he is up to it.
I've learned that jumping to conclusions is too easy and it's best to stay calm and hold fire until you have the facts.
