Do you make "obligatory" Xmas phone calls?

I live about 250 miles from my family. (I like to keep at least one state between us.) I have to make obligatory Xmas phone calls. You'd think that would be an easy thing to do. But it's your family, so, of course it isn't. There's kind of a pecking order about who call who. For a long time, I had to call a great aunt, who sent me $2 for Xmas, which I was supposed to use to buy a car. Then there's my brother. He could have two space aliens sitting on his couch, an FBI swat team, who cornered Public Enemy #1 in his garage, a bomb squad, and the house on fire, but "No, there's nothing new".

Tell the great aunt that her $2 gifts have added up, and you just bought a 71 Malibu..Made by Revell model car company. JimB. Grin.

Sure. But if it gets busy, my brothers and sister also have a phone and my number so I don’t feel it is all on me. My parents are deceased. I called my brother earlier yesterday and my sister called later. I will call the other brother today. All my kids and grandkids are here today, so we only need to call across the room!

It’s very unlike the days when my kids were little. The phone lines would be overloaded on the morning of the 25th. Everyone trying to call someone. Getting up early to beat the rush. The busy signals, over and over. And it wasn’t just pushing one button in memory. Spinning that dial over and over.

I enjoy every phone call with every relative. Aunt C called Christmas Eve to let me know she liked the 1947 picture I sent her, as did Uncle T on Christmas day. I called one of my brothers and, of course, my son, on Christmas Day. (Need to call my other brother today..) Final call was from the niece of my second wife.

Why bother? Well, I found out today that one of my cousins passed away early this morning. He was a couple of years older than me, a Viet Nam vet who paid his dues as a door gunner and later developed cancer because Agent Orange. I sure wish I had called him yesterday...

I'm so sorry for your loss, Buckeye. AO killed a lot of fine people who thought they were serving their countries, not to mention civilians.

I text Merry Christmas or whatever holiday they text Merry Christmas back. No one really wants to talk. I got a call from my friend in NYC. That was the only one.

Only to my mum, Who is 96, and living 380 miles away from me now, since my dad died last year
Ive not seen her since hubbys stroke ....but we talk on the phone a few times a week...
