Do you mend your socks? - called Darning

Socks are rather cheap these days and I will assume 99% or people will throw them away when holes develop.
One image from my childhood was my Grandmother sitting in front of the tv watching the afternoon shows, with a sock covering one hand while she darned the hole out of existence.

You're right about them being cheap. When my socks wear through, after they get washed, they get cut into grease rags since I do most of my mechanical work myself. Always in need of a rag.

I did when I was young ( a kid at school ).. we learned how to darn socks in Homecraft classes and my mother had one of these Darning Mushrooms

I do remember tho' that darned socks were always uncomfortable..

My darning egg was great for using and if done right, it shouldn't ever be uncomfortable.

yes but I was just a kid, so I didn't have the expertise of a good seamstress.. or knitter..

lol..I think that it was in the Navy that my ex husband learned to sew...

Husband (now deceased) darned his socks. I always cringe - he used a light bulb to maintain the correct shape at the heal. Surprisingly, he never punctured the bulb.

yes I wouldn't darn socks now.. they're pretty much disposable nowadays...

Darning socks was a ritual in our house when I was a youngster.
At school, all the kids seemed to have different colour heals to their socks as a result of darning.
If I had to, I could still darn my socks, but I'll be darned if I would through choice.

Mine usually wear out on the bottom, they become so thin there's not enough material to darn without deforming the sock. I will stitch them if it's a repairable tear though.

I use the old socks as shop rags. Wear them like a mitten to wipe things off than toss in the trash.

My grandmother taught me to darn socks using a light bulb. I never liked it, nor was I good at it. And, the hole was always in the heel, the repair then gave me blisters. Now I just toss them.

yes it was always the heels or the toes that needed darning ... with old socks at our house which were beyond any repair.. my mother would have us put them on our feet with a duster wrapped around, and make us skate over the newly polished floors to buff them up to a shine..

Perhaps I'm too young to recall a generation of frugal ancestors?!? Nah, that's not it!
