Who said anything about leaving it open? Lid goes back on, you know.Fair enough - if it's left open insects and bacteria can get in.

It happened to me too with some bought bread. Now when I buy some rye and whole grain wheat bread which is sliced, I wrap a couple of slices in plastic food wrap and then put them in a freezer bag and in the freezer. When I want some take an individual package or two out and put it in fridge. That way no more problems with bread getting moldy. For some reason the bread I bake doesn't get moldy in the fridge! And I keep it for 2 or 3 weeksI always keep my bread in the fridge. Here in Sydney with our horrible hot days and humid weather, it will go mouldy within a couple of days.
I noticed that too! That is because the fruit now is not ripened on the tree anymore, they take it off as soon as it has the right size and then "freeze ripe" them. Then the fruit is sent to stores and of course while sitting there gets mashy and brown. And it doesn't taste at all. When I was young I remember eating a lot of fruit and it was very delicious, now I don't like it anymore.Fresh produce is my bane this year even though I don't think they have a BB date. I had to throw out almost half a bag of tangerines that went bad just sitting on the kitchen table. Same thing with apples. They seem to rot from the inside out so it can't be determined by looking at the outside of the fruit.
I'm so glad you are SOOO much smarter than everyone here and can guide us all through our ignorance, because obviously we know NOT what we are talking about, even when we do.Then it was a contaminant in the water. As I've said, pure water does not go off. If it's gone off, then something was in the water - OR - something from the packaging.

Good for you!I told the Manager at my local Supermarket to stop putting near-expired food on the shelves, or I would shop somewhere else.
