Do You Remember Your First Pet?

Abstinence.

"Making Out!" "Partying!" Partying has different meanings. It can be anything from just how is reads, having a party, doing drugs, getting drunk, getting it on, etc.

Sorry, I went off topic.

Some great pet stories here! My first pet was a goat named Camille. She met a bad end, so you might not want to read further.

First, I'll mention that we were very, very poor...at the time, WE were Mom, my two older brothers, and my baby sister. A neighbor gave us the goat primarily for its milk, and Mom made cheese and butter, as well. Sadly, when my uncle saw that we had been without meat for nearly a month, he sent my siblings and I to his house, and slaughtered poor Camille! Mom stewed a bit of the meat that very night, and we had goat meat for a while, but it was many years before we were told we had eaten our beloved Camille. We were told she had been sold to a circus boy. Somehow, that made it ok. (We were all under the age of 7)

Yes it was a goldfish that I won from a fair ground at the grand old age of 5. It lasted all of three days then went belly up. My Mother said she would bury it but I saw her secretly flush it down the loo.

As I was upset at the loss I was treated to sliced apricots after my dinner. Bad move by Mother as I thought they looked like my dead goldfish and I have never touched them since

I remember those well. You won them by tossing a Ping-Pong ball and having it land in the little fish bowl. At our fairs, the water in the little fish bowls was colored, which might have led to the goldfish seldom living more than a couple of days.

I also remember when you could buy little lizards that were harnessed by a piece of string with a safety pin on the other end, so you could attach them to your shirt. They had a pretty short life expectancy, too.

And don't forget the tiny turtles in a big tank at the dime store, often with decals on their shell. You could buy a small plastic "habitat" that had a plastic palm tree sticking out of the top and a little "island" in the middle with a ramp leading to it. They lasted a little longer than the fish and lizards, but eventually there would be tears and back-yard funerals (or midnight flushings).

Your story was sad and sweet at the same time. I'm sorry you lost your Camille though. It was nice your mom and uncle kept the truth from you kids. Sort of like on Mama's Family. Eunice didn't find out they ate her rabbit Fluffy till she was an adult.
