Do You Think It's Healthy To Swim in Public Pools?

It's been years since I've gone swimming in a public swimming pool. I don't think it's healthy at all, and I remember a long time ago feeling a bit sick, like I had a cold, after using a public pool. Hubby felt bad that time too, and feels the same way, won't go near a public pool anymore.

I don't enjoy all the chlorine either, I think it's bad for you too. Also, IMO, they couldn't put enough chlorine to kill all the stuff in there that comes out of people's noses, mouths and other orifices. Many people make no effort to use a restroom before using the pool, or during their swim if they need to. Some people just have very bad hygiene, and don't shower before the pool, either there or at home.

I just joined a fitness center a couple of days ago, and they have a pool there, it's just meant for exercise. They also have a hot tub area that's public, I think hot tubs are even worse, due to the higher warmer water temperature. Just out of curiosity today, I checked out the area and read the signs on the wall. I don't think there's any children allowed in the gym, they have a babysitting area for the mother's that work out there.

Anyhoo, the sign said that anyone wearing diapers (I imagine Depends), have to wear protective outer clothing over them. That reminded me of pools I've been in where children were present, the young ones on the shallow end. Didn't think much about it years back, but I'm sure there were a few loads there that weren't contained properly. :eeew:

How about you, do you frequent public pools or hot tubs?

Australian public pools are safe ....... generally:

Depends on the pool. I would rather the ocean, but in warm, clear water. Like Hawaii. I would be afraid of ponds now that some are producing bad bacteria that causes skin eating diseases. A pool has chemicals in it that kills that bacteria..but you also take the chance that the pool attendant makes sure it is at the right level with it destroys germs but won't peel your skin off having too much.

So in essence...Hawaii for me.

Wanna freak people out, throw a couple unwrapped baby Ruth's into the pool.:eek:nthego:

Our city pool, when I was a kid, was the Chenango River and was supplied fresh water all the time. I would think this would have been healthier than regular swimming pools. Unless, of course, the pool was on the low side of a cow pasture.

There are small water testing kits that you can buy to check those pool waters.

I have my own 15x30x7 pool,that I check 2 times a day AM & PM.
I use very little chemicals in this pool as I have a very good filtering system to do the REAL cleaning.
Live just 7 miles from the Florida Atlantic coast warm waters but never swim in it.
Come on...milions of fishs, whales and dolphins have to pee and poop somewhere.

Lol Phantom, you gave me my morning chuckle! ;) I always liked swimming in the ocean, and I agree with Fran, the waters of Hawaii are the best. We did some snorkeling there, and the colorful fish, etc. were amazing to see. Don't like lake swimming, and now with the warm water lake health issues with flesh/brain eating organisms, I wouldn't even try swimming there. My sister used to have her own private pool in Texas, and I did use that when I was there...she kept it well maintained, and very few used it.

I haven't been in a public pool for over 30 years. My one and only (so it seems) allergy is chlorine, so every time I came out I looked like a sunburned Creature of the Chlorine Lagoon.

I figure, if they used it in war then I'm going to stay away from it.

My mom detested public pools. We were only allowed to swim at The Officers' Club or at home or in the ocean. Swimming laps is my favorite exercise (duh). In the seventies, I used to park at apartment complexes and walk to the pool as if I lived there, swim my laps and split. Only got caught once...
