Do you think some people just seem to attract bad luck?

A woman who is in the local senior's group had had unbelievably bad happenings in her life in just the past month. First her son was badly injured at work. Then a new house she bought had an electric fire. After that her husband took sick (I don't know the nature of the illness, but from what she said on FB, it isn't something he will get over soon). Just a few days ago she reported that a water pipe leaked between floors and they had extensive water damage in their house. I really find it stunning anyone would have hat much bad luck.

Sometimes it seems like when one bad thing happens it "attracts" more negative things, doesn't it? It's almost like you're putting out bad vibes that attracts them. I know this isn't logical, but it sure seems that way sometimes.

I don't really think that an individual attracts bad luck, or if these things can even be described as luck, except maybe in a playful way. Life is full of ups and down, sometimes it seems for all of us that 'when it rains it pours', one bad thing happens after another. If people paid more attention to all the times that nothing bad was happening, or good things happened it would at least balance out.

Most everybody gets hurt at work at one time or another, we all get sick now and then, and homeowners, especially those with older houses often have mishaps with old bad wiring, plumbing, etc. Her son was badly injured, but he wasn't killed, which does happen to some people. Her husband is sick and he won't be over it very soon, but he wasn't really diagnosed with terminal cancer, was he? I think these are everyday things that we all go through in this life.

So maybe this gal isn't having such bad luck, and hopefully soon some good things will happen and these things will become a distant memory.

No, I don't think there is such a thing as attracting bad luck. The accident/illness in her family is life. The problems with her home could be that she did not have it thoroughly inspected before she purchased it.

I suspect she might be a negative person who likes to say how terrible life is. There used to be a lot of women like that in my condo complex. I had to avoid them so they wouldn't bring me down, too. Most of them have moved or passed.

Some people can 'attract' bad luck because of a series of poor decision making events. However, "bad luck" I believe is mostly unforeseeable, unavoidable events that come with normal living.

I don't think it's any unseen force that throws bad luck at us, most of the time it's that "crap happens". I'm thinking of comedian Tig Notaro. I'm cutting and pasting from another site. But what bravery to get past all that and survive to have a bright career and strong marriage in the end. She and her partner also welcomed twins last summer.

In 2012, Notaro went through a brutal year filled with health problems and personal losses. She had pneumonia and then contracted a potentially deadly bacterial infection that caused her to lose more than 20 pounds. After battling these issues, she lost her mother who had suffered a fall and died a short time later. Notaro then had to cope with a breakup from her girlfriend. She also learned that summer that she had breast cancer in both of her breasts. Shortly after receiving her cancer diagnosis, Notaro took the stage at Largo, a club in Los Angeles. She decided to put aside her regular material and do a much more personal performance. According to Fresh Air, Notaro came up with "this idea that I walk on stage and say thank you, I have cancer, thanks for coming" while taking a shower before the show. She spent her roughly 30-minute set tackling different aspects of this difficult topic and finding the humor in it. The audience was spellbound by her performance. [h=2]Fellow comedian Louis C.K. was at the Largo that night and saw Notaro. He took to Twitter to praise her performance, writing "In 27 years doing this, I've seen a handful of truly great, masterful stand-up sets. One was Tig Notaro last night at Largo." Louis C.K. soon put a recording of her up for sale on his website, which later was sold as Tig Notaro Live. Notaro received a Grammy Award nomination for the album.

I know I have had times in my life when I felt there was a black cloud hanging over my head, but haven't we all at one time or another? It's life sometimes. I do feel sorry for the lady, she has had a lot of unfortunate things happen in a short time. I hope things begin to turn around for her!
