Do you truly believe the rich get away with murder?

win231 poste the item about a socialite woman, who ran down 2 kids, while probably being drunk. Most of the comments were about the idea that this privileged woman would not be punished, because of her wealth, and prominence. Do you truly believe that if this woman was guilty as charged, she would skate on the charge? Do you truly believe the rich get away with murder?

I wouldn't go as far as to say that the rich get away with murder, but it sure stinks to high heaven how many get off on charges and/or receive lighter sentences.

I hope they nail the socialite woman in question to the cross along with her cheap legal team!

The rich can afford to hire a team of expensive lawyers....whereas the poor often have to rely on a public defender, who is more interested in making his next golf game. Just like Income Inequality, there is a wide gap between the rich and poor in our justice system.

I dunno how it works where you live, but here, public defenders are not rushing out to their next golf game, and probably can't even afford to play golf. Most of them are very recently out of law school and are very inexperienced; they are also seriously overloaded with cases, and they don't exactly make big bucks. As soon as they get a bit of experience, they are off to more lucrative jobs.

I can tell you unequivocally and absolutely YES. I saw it personally happen twice in my life.

"Today I saw a bumper sticker that said, 'Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich.' I think that’s right, but it’s also only part of the story...The belief that it is acceptable to be rich is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich. The desire to be like them keeps the poor from murdering the rich. None of this, of course, keeps the rich from murdering the poor."

But then, on the other side of the coin, there are a few PD’s that make a pretty good living as a PD. However, you are correct. Overworked and underpaid is their biggest complaint. The young attorneys trying to defend their clients that go up against seasoned Prosecutors usually does not go well.

I used to put myself in a defendant’s position and think how would I handle it? Would I get a high price attorney or a little known lawyer that doesn’t come with a huge price tag. I guess it would depend on how much and what kind of evidence there was and what the crime was. I mean, if I thought for a moment that I was going down anyway based upon the amount of evidence, why would I shell out tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars? One thing is for sure and that is I wouldn’t go it alone. Judges aren’t impressed with defendant’s acting as their own lawyer, even if they do have Counsel sitting at their table.

Apologies for jumping straight in before introducing myself. I will do so later on the appropriate thread.
It would seem that you don't need money, rank or title to avoid the courtroom if you kill someone. The trick is
to get yourself into The Diplomatic Service.
Anne Sacoolas, the wife of an American diplomat, fled Britain under diplomatic immunity weeks after her car collided with the motorcycle of Harry Dunn, 19, near Royal Air Force Croughton, a military base operated by the U.S. Air Force in central England.
Mrs Sacoolas forgot that in Britain you drive on the left. She hit Harry Dunn head on killing him instantly. She flew out of the country the following day claiming diplomatic immunity.
In January, 2020, The United States turned down an extradition request for Ms. Sacoolas, a decision that the British government called “a denial of justice.”
