Do You Wear Your Seatbelt?

The first time I totaled a car, wearing my seat belt may have resulted in me being crushed. The second time I totaled a car, the seat and shoulder belt, along with the air bag saved me from serious injury or death. I am certain that the second scenario would be more typical. I would attribute the first scenario to answered prayers of my mother since my wild lifestyle back then always had her praying for me. I always buckle up!

Some years back, a young man in our area lost control on an icy road, rolled his small truck, and was propelled out into a tree because he was not buckled up. He died on impact. Once you roll, the doors will often fly open.

Never did when I was younger, but when my son was born it quickly became a habit, and in my classic cars I installed seat/shoulder belts . Oddly enough I still don't wear a helmet on the motorcycle. I feel they obstruct my vision and hearing, and the way I ride I probably wouldn't survive a a crash anyway. That, and some studies show that helmets can cause broken necks.
 
I reckon that in the 10 years I worked for Metro Toronto Ambulance I attended at least a thousand car accidents. Yes I always wore my seat belt IN the ambulance, and the full headlight system was always on, day or night, so that other drivers would see us. When I raced oval track the club required a 5 point professional seat belt harness that was bolted to the roll cage bars and the frame of the car. The harness could not be more than 5 years old.

One of my pet peeves is the practice by some people of passing the shoulder belt UNDER their arm, instead of OVER the shoulder. In a forcefull collision that WILL break your ribs.. By wearing the belt OVER the shoulder, you are spreading out the force of the deceleration across the entire chest. That is how it is designed to work.

A tip. When the air bag in your steering wheel deploys in a collision there will be lot of smoke and dust floating in the air inside your car. That is normal. The bag comes out of the storage area at top speed so you may get surface skin abrasions from the bag being deployed on your hands and arms. JimB.

That is so true timoc my poor old dad lost his balance in the loo once and mum found him wrapped around the Z bend

Of course. I always have. With these modern cars, at least with mine, they don't start, unless you have it on. My car also won't start if a door isn't fully closed. If you drive without it strapped on, there will be a red flashing light and an irritating chiming noise. Even with the older cars, I have always used them. They are there to save you life. Use them!

Yes my new car makes a hell of a racket when we don’t wear our seatbelts 😡
 
I've ridden tour buses, excursion buses, airplanes and taxis. Never ever saw a seatbelt in the first two. Last time in a bus was greyhound 2009 though.

You'd think there's be some warning light for the driver to say "Put on your seat belts" if it's left to the riders choice, many will not wear it.

the exception was riding my motorcycle. Wouldn’t be a good idea to strap in on one of those.

I remember when Illinois was contemplating seat belts for motorcycles. The outcry was heard to neighboring planets I believe. Why would they consider such a stupid, stupid thing???
