Do You Wear Your Seatbelt?

Interesting tid bit. New Hampshire is the only state in the US where it isn't mandatory to wear a seat belt.
Also, any vehicle manufactured in the US before 1965 weren't required to have seat belts. For a while, lawmakers tried to make you retro fit a seat belt in older cars. That died on the vine when lawyers pointed out the liability factor of someone inexperienced installing the belts and then, say, selling the car where a person gets hurt from the non engineered belting arrangement.
Would it have been too simple for them to make it illegal for anyone other than professional fitters to install the seat belts ?

I'm not sure my car will even drive without a seatbelt fastened. If I start her up and get engrossed in something like the satnav etc before I put the belt on there's a lady's voice (the car not Mrs Oy) that insists I fasten my seatbelt. Repeatedly, every 20 seconds or so.
Mine does the same.. alarm goes off..

Well, I was completely against "the law" telling us we had to wear helmets until I was dirt biking out at Glamath and the fella on his bike right ahead of me went up this 15 ft. sand hill and didn't make it. When he hit, his skull was cracked wide open. (This was in the soft sand!) That kinda made me a believer.
Mom bought a Honda 100 for us. Sister was riding that day, cranked it, hit the carport pole, went over and I heard the "THOK!" when her helmet hit the asphalt.

Never rode the thing without a helmet afterward.

As I recall, when first proposed, there were lot's of installers... until the issue of liability reared it's head. Overnight, installers disappeared. You must remember, this is a nation of "I'll sue if something happens to me". Few people if any had the deep pockets of the auto manufacturers who could defend themselves if an engineer made a mistake with the installation. Heck, I had a shop and did install some seat belts ( 5 point racing harness style as per our race cars) for friends, but, the specter of lawsuits was enough for me to give it up. :(
You have to know the proper way to mount belts, as incorrect can cause severe damage to you. (think crushed vertebrae, broken collar bone, ribs, etc.).

If there’s a seatbelt available, do you wear it?

In a car?
On a plane?
On a bus?

For me it’s a no brainer. If it’s there, I wear it.

On Christmas Eve a passenger bus went over on its side on really bad, icy roads. Four people died and 8 ended up in hospital. None of them was wearing a seatbelt, even though they were available.

Recently ~25 people on a plane were injured went it hit turbulence.
When I was a child, we didn't have any seatbelts. When I was a young adult, I didn't always wear them. Now I wear them even for a short trip to the store. I hardly ever fly on planes or take buses. Been decades, but I remember on a plane they tell you when you need to put your seatbelt on, I never had a problem with such safety rules.

I started wearing a seat belt in the car the day it became law in California. Some time in the early 80's. Prior to that, I didn't. Haven't been on a bus in years and I think I take it off on the plane when able. It's kind of ingrained in me to do as told and what the law is.
