Documentation on the Sovjet Gulag System

I apologize for not watching the videos, but I remember reading a piece about the Gulag years back in a magazine I receive, “The Smithsonian.” I think it was written because it was the 50th anniversary of when it was shut down.

The Gulag must have been terrible for the 20,000,000 that went through it. (Maybe I got the number wrong?) I think 2,000,000 died. The Gulag was a series of work camps that forced the prisoners to do all kinds of work within the USSR. The people put in the Gulag were Stalin’s political prisoners and outcasts.

The one thing I wanted to mention was that when I was a kid, my dad used to kiddingly tell me he was going to ship me off to the salt mines in Siberia, but until I read about the Gulag, I believed him that there was such a place all those years. Siberia and the Arctic region was used as part of the Gulag having the prisoners working on infrastructure projects and mining different minerals in freezing temperatures. There were many work camps throughout Russia.

Didn’t Khrushchev shut it down?
