Does anyone do plasma for profit?

I don't have to do this, I have money but in addition to my frugal ways I thought this might be a good way to make extra cash and provide a service. Has anyone done this?

Never...
Do not care for medical procedures
Thanks, I don't either but I got used to donating blood when my husband an others in his family were suffering from cancer. Many insurance companys do not cover the cost of a blood transfusion. If the family gave then if someone needed blood the cost of that was credited by our donations.

There is a ‘blood bank’ in the strip mall near my home.

It makes me sad to see people lining up for the doors to open, but it may provide a life saving benefit to both the donor and the ultimate recipient of the blood products being sold.

I wouldn’t look at it as a frugal way of picking up a little spare change, but like Gary says, “Get hungry, you do things”.

I am not hungry and I have plenty of money right now. Everything is going to hell in a hand basket. I have pulled my money out of the market with all this crazy crap going on. I am just thinking of things, other than what I do now to save money and bring in a little cash. I used to not worry about it but I do now. I am just trying to be proactive, to keep my future secure. It is a scary time right now for many of us.

CSL is the company in my neighborhood.

I don’t have any firsthand experience with them, but this may be enough information to get you started.

Good luck.

I looked into it some years ago thinking it could be some quick cash, thinking it would be just like donating blood which I have done for years. What deterred me was the process was like three hours long if I'm remembering correctly, that made it not seem worth it.

I did it many moons ago when I was going to college. I think I got paid $10 a trip (was a long time ago) and I was limited to going twice a week. The extra cash helped at the time. I also was very smitten on one of the girls who worked there so that helped too :) One time I was laying down on the chair type thing and reading a text book for a class of mine. The book fell and hit the tube which ended up pulling out the needle. The girl I had the crush on rushed over to patch me up. I did not feel any pain because my heart was melting. I did not go back after that though. I still have a small scar on my vein because of that incident. Sorry for the long ramble but this post triggered that memory.

I do not donate now , not because of that incident but because I do not need to. I do donate blood though when I am reminded to.

No, but I signed up with my medical clinic as a research volunteer, so all my plasma gets donated every time I go in for blood tests. I get little payments for participating in specific research trials, though. So far I've been in a drug trial and two different clinical trials, and just joined another one. They usually send you a check every 3 months for how ever many years the trial lasts, but the one I just signed up for is gonna pay with Amazon cards, about $400 worth.

I have always wondered about those trials and what they involve. Do you have to get an OK from your primary before you do them ?

Never gave plasma, but the Blood Bank called me twice a year for blood donations for years ..... no money involved, only refreshments and t-shirts, and a free health check-up each time.

And I got a handwritten note once from a family whose baby's life I helped save.

... guess I'm too old now for them to bother calling anymore.

You don't need an OK from your PCP, the research doctors doing the trials order all the tests they need; blood, imaging, EKG, etc., and sometimes a biopsy. After you volunteer, you're interviewed and then you fill out a questionnaire or two. The questionnaire for the drug trial was 40 pages, the one for the clinical trial was only 3 pages. Then you go for an exam and/or whatever tests they need.

The upcoming trial is actually a 2yr study on lower back pain. It will mostly include imaging and physical therapy; no drugs. The results of the study will be published on the NIH website, after it's peer reviewed.

If the reason for the study is to improve physical therapy, that's an excellent cause, imo! Currently, PT is a total waste of time for most back pain sufferers.

My 30 something neighbor lady did this and earned $1000.00 the first month with a local promotion. She left for a week in Disneyland yesterday - with lots of fun money!

My husband does this.He uses the money to fund his golf habit lol. The first month he was paid $1,100 as they had a special promotion-now he gets about $70.00 per donation and donates twice a week.He gets irritated though because it takes well over an hour for his donation to complete-everybody else is done in about 25 minutes. They keep telling him he has to drink more water, but he drinks more water than anyone I know.He finally figured out the other day that it`s because on the days he doesn`t donate,he spends most of the day out in the yard mowing the acre, messing around with all the plants etc. So he sweats up a storm. He didn`t have the problem during the winter. So the other day our daughter gave him to hydration powder to put in his water before he donates. We`ll see if that works...
