Does anyone else make assemblage sculptures?

I challenged myself to make an assemblage sculpture (items made from old junk, recycled materials, vintage kitchen objects, old tools, etc) about two years ago and got hooked thereafter! I’ve made sixteen of them by now, each different. I don’t sell them but have taken them “on the road” to nearby retirement homes, and also had them on display at our local art center. They’re a lot of fun to make!

Here are the ones I’ve made so far… I don’t sell them, but have had them on display at local art galleries and, what was most fun, I took them “on the road” to local retirement homes. It was fun having the residents try to guess which vintage items I’d used to make each one.

They each have a name and a story. If you’d like a closer view of any, please just ask and I’ll post. I never spend more than a dollar or two on any of the junk, and some are actually made from my own things… for example, the little horse was my mom’s 1930s meat tenderizer, and the ostrich was her feather duster.

Two were inspired by songs… the old truck with flowers growing through it (far right) was inspired by Joni Mitchell’s song about “they paved paradise and put up a parking lot”, and the dog and junk yard were inspired by Jim Croce’s ”mad mad Leroy Brown… meaner than a junk yard dog”.

The sculpture on bottom far left is two-sided, a different face on each side and is reminiscent of WWI doughboys.

those are wonderful SueBee! we have a lady at work that does something with these flat caps off the liquid med vials...i don't know what though.

Oh they are sweet. There is someone in the Atlanta area who does giant outdoor ones that you can glimpse from the street.
 
I was once interested in miniatures. ( 1 inch equaled 1 foot, I think) I did tiny oil paintings on little canvases. I started making an art gallery out of foam core but must have scrapped it. The fun part I recall was making a planter out of a mouth wash cap and filling it with ting vegitation or twigs. There was also a bench from some sort of box lid.
 
I don't but I really respect folks who do make them. There are some really cool very talented artists who display their assemblage sculptures during San Francisco Open Studios weekends and I always love stopping by their studios.

There are also some students at San Jose State who do assemblage sculptures and display during in the student galleries but they are usually few and far between.
