There is another way of looking at these situations I think. The people who give in to crooks like this must be so lonely and so desperately lacking in self esteem, that all it takes is flattery or promises of love to suck them into these kinds of cons. I think loneliness and poor self esteem can affect people differently. Some become cynical and angry and others begin to believe lies.
I think that is the case, they need to believe the person so desperately that they can convince themselves it is all real. I do applaud those that come out publicly and say that this is what has happened as they are really putting themselves in a very vulnerable position.
