Moved from Cleveland, Ohio into a new Cox home at 3712 W. Palmaire Dr., (just N.W. of W.35th & Glendale in June of '64. Attended Washington Elementary, (4th grade), and Palo Verde Elementary, (5th, 6th, 7th grades). Chris Town Mall was new, as was the original Sun City. My Father was a bricklayer, and helped build the original Palm Glen Shopping Center @ 35th & Glendale, (4 stores, total w/ Skaggs Drugs the anchor).
I remember A.J. Bayless and El Rancho grocery stores, Gym & Swim, Encanto Park, bowling at the old '300 Bowl, and riding bikes w/ my friends all over Maricopa County, not coming home until the streetlights came on. Good days back then and good memories. We moved back to Cleveland in June of '64, but we weren't the only ones.
Through the years I've been able to do extensive research on many of the kids I went to school with, and it seems as fast as families were moving into Phoenix in the early to mid-'60's, they moved out almost as fast. Today, I feel more than fortunate that we also moved.
I've spoken to over 40 people I went to school w/, and (almost) all concur, that for those who stayed, job prospects in Phoenix after graduation were almost non-existent, (June '69). The guys who didn't go to college, (and the majority didn't), ended up in the service, (many killed in Nam). The girls got married as soon as they could, many having multiple marriages, even before the 10-year reunions.
Others ended up drug addicts or in jail. I know there are many things which factor into people's lives, but again, I loved Phoenix when I was there, but feel so fortunate not to have stayed.
