Does anyone still eat rabbit?

I was wrong. Rodents are in the family Rodentia, which includes rats, squirrels and beavers.
Now I'm relieved. Thank you. I loved eating rabbits so much as a kid to think of them as rodents would have made me sick.

I couldn't stand rabbit. The elk that I ate was very good. Better than beef really.
 
When I had my little 3 acre plot in the country, I raised & eat most of my own meat. Beef, turkeys, chickens, rabbits, goats, lamb & pork. I hunted deer, duck, pheasant & elk with some success. Raised & sold veggies out of my 1/2 acre garden. At the time the Rex rabbit craze was the thing. I was a little apprehensive because of my children when it was time for processing the rabbits.

I got advice about dressing rabbit, one I liked - diced rabbit meat, deep fried, rolled in a mixture of milk eggs & pancake batter. Called it 'Rabbit Nuggets'. I prepared 3 of them in a large bowl for a meal. My wife was at work so it was my doing. My 3 children & I loved the meal, left none for the wife as a result of our gluttony.

Dislike the wild taste of deer, duck/geese & greasy lamb. Couldn't bring myself to butcher the goat kid, gave it to the neighbors & never looked back, the rest were all consumed or sold. My son sold all the jerked deer & elk on the bus, my blood pressure went off the charts trying to eat too much salt. Rabbits became a possibility, except the stomach muscle which was too rubbery. I for one liked rabbit, and would raise them again for meat very easy to raise, skin and process.

I did quit hunting after a few years, was wasting too much wild game & money on the dogs.

Never tried moose, bear or squirrel. Elk is somewhat better than deer.

My BIL was & still is Wyoming's answer to Jeremiah Johnson. He's owns 20 acres in both Nevada (coyotes) & Montana (bear) that he hunts on. He used to take my sister along on his bear hunts. She never liked the isolation. I asked him one time about bear meat, I never wanted to try it after his answer. I think he even had dog meat or horse meat a few times, but can't remember that far back. He scares me to this day. There's the law & then there's his law. I also procured a few dead calves as bait for his bear/coyote hunts from time to time.

I had rabbit hutches and raised tame rabbits as a kid. How do you catch a unique tame rabbit, unique up on it.

With the advent of modern / modern Farming, clearing the ground of all habitats, the Pheasant population diminished. Thus my
interest in Hunting waned. Never chose Turkey Hunting & went Duck hunting a couple of times, very short seasons, $100's spent,
Duck not all that tasty for my pallet so I quit hunting wild game. Bambi didn't hold hunt interest with me.

Last Rabbit I hunted, skinned and ate was many decades ago.

My interests went to Motorcycles and 4X4 N for over 30 years. Shrimp Alfredo is the go
to word now. ... (y) ... Can hear the occasional Rabbit screaming out there in the night,
at the edge of the forest, Coyotes and Coon victims. Rules of natural nature of things still
continue on. ..... Coyote howl late at night still.

I never had squirrel.
 
We raised rabbits for meat when I was a kid, also hunted rabbit, so ate it often back then, but I haven't had it in forty years.

My daughter and her husband eat rabbit ocassionally, they call it Hobbit dinner day.
 
Cotton tail rabbits and snowshoe hares are delicious. Rabbit hunting is about the only game where the food value exceeds the cost of hunting them.

Elk is good/great, but obviously varies by age, sex, cut, how the meat is handled in the field and packed for freezing. I shot a calf last season and it eats like veal!
 
In the old part of Quebec City there's a restaurant called "Lapin Saute" (The Crazy Rabbit in English). They specialize in rabbit dishes of all kinds, including rabbit pate on toast at breakfast.

It's a quaint little place.

Yes, well when you brought up rabbits freely breeding in Australia and being considered "feral" I supposed that there were no species of rabbit indigenous to Australia.

Is that so? And if so, were there any small herbivores that feral rabbits outcompeted & displaced?
That is true. I suppose they did compete with the Australian native herbivores, let alone commercial grazing animals.
 
I had cousins who lived in a small town but were "closer to the farm" than my family was. They raised rabbits for market, but there was so much demand from direct buyers that sales to the local butcher all but stopped.

I think the demand came from pioneering, agricultural, and cultural background passed down a couple of generations. When I grew up it had just begun to become an unusual food.
 
🤢🤮 I eat cow. I eat pig. I eat chicken. I've even eaten buffalo. And alligator. And shark. But I will not eat bunny rabbits.

That said, when I was a kid, my dad took my brothers hunting and they came back with squirrels. The smell of it made me gag and stayed in the house for days. If I think about it hard enough, I can even pull up the exact smell and get sick all over again.
 
Both my dad and my maternal grandfather raised them for a while for meat. I remember liking them but haven't had any forever. I liked squirrel, too. I have both squirrels and wild bunnies in my yard, but I'd never go after the varmints.

Some years ago, we went to one of those fancy-schmancy restaurants that served fancy-schmancy things in tiny quantities for fancy-schmancy prices. One of the items on the appetizer menu was "coffee-encrusted rabbit liver tacos", which are three things I wouldn't think you'd ever see together. Besides, I can't imagine how many rabbit livers it would take to fill a taco..... I passed.
