Does talent trump character?

It seems that if you are considered great at any thing you are excused for what would be considered bad or immoral behavior. From athletes to rock stars to politicians as long as long as we like what they do we look the other way, especially in regard to sexual behavior...

Bad, immoral, even degenerate behaviour is no-one else's business unless it moves into the criminal sphere, or unless the person is presenting themselves publically as a person of exemplary character and using this façade for personal gain.

It doesn't matter how talented you are, society frowns on rape, embezzlement and domestic violence for very good reasons.

You are probably right when one considers Bill Clinton, Willie Nelson, and so many others from all walks of life. But we probably wouldn't condone this behavior by someone in our own family, or would we?

Most of these people are multiple offenders, which begs the question...

Yes, most spouses give up, except for Hillary, and I'm not sure about Bill's mother...:eek:nthego:

I agree with DW. Good character is important. Perfect character is impossible. Criminal character should be dealt with.
To a large extent, "character" is a judgmental thing. Most of the time, its no one else's business.
Yes, talent does top character; up to a point. Its a much rarer thing. Now if we could only find a few people who really have it.

There are so many talented people in so many fields. Surely you can think of some...

I have low tolerance for sports people who behave badly in public.
Bad sportsmanship is enough to turn me off them.

The latest example is Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios who sledged Stan Wawrinka with a despicable comment about his girlfriend.
He isn't getting off scot free and nor should he.

Nick Kyrgios: Suspended 28-day ban & fine for Stan Wawrinka jibe

Nick Kyrgios has been given a suspended 28-day ban and $25,000 (£16,200) fine by the Association of Tennis Professionals for making lewd remarks about Stan Wawrinka's girlfriend.

The incident took place during their Rogers Cup match earlier this month.

An ATP review found the 20-year-old guilty of "aggravated behaviour".

The Australian had already received a $10,000 (£6,400) tournament fine for the "unacceptable comments", which were picked up by on-court microphones. The fine and ban will be imposed if Kyrgios incurs any fines for verbal or physical abuse over the next six months, or accumulate fines totalling more than $5,000 (£3,200) for any other offences at ATP-sanctioned tournaments.

Although world number 41 Kyrgios apologised for the comments, Switzerland's French Open champion Wawrinka, 30, called for major action to be taken.

The ATP's head of rules and competition Gayle David Bradshaw said: "This incident reflected poorly on our sport.

"Nick has expressed regret. The best result would be that he learns a lesson and that he understands he is responsible to the tour and to fellow players for
both his actions and his words."

Kyrgios also received a $2,500 (£1,600) fine for unsportsmanlike conduct relating to a comment made to a ball person during the Rogers Cup match in
Montreal.

He previously came under heavy criticism for his behaviour after appearing to stop trying when he was given a code violation during his defeat by France's Richard Gasquet at Wimbledon in July.

I don't care how good he is as a tennis player, that doesn't excuse his appalling behaviour.
I demand that the sportspeople that I follow be good sports and people who treat others decently.

Americans don't care so much. They just might boo a little but will still watch for the most part...

I have to ask... why is Hillary still being dogged over her decisions regarding her marriage. Why is this even an issue? It seems she is being made to atone for Bill's sins.. and to defend her response... which is really none of our business.. sort of like her private emails.

Don't you think that she stayed with Bill so that she could get to where she is today? She wants this so bad and the anger and arrogance is showing as it just might slip away...

No, no, QS, men play the same game when the opportunity presents itself. There is enough sexism on the part of both genders to keep playwrights with material forever. It is just that men have been able to get into positions of power before women had the chance...

Tying Hillary's success to Bills success is sexist... or at the very least implies that Hillary wouldn't have risen to her present level without Bill.. I agree though that we are all dependent on our circumstances.. Luck.. and lack there of.

Okay!! I need to make a division line line here. "Character", "moral", "immoral", even the word "bad" among many others are subjective terms. Now "illegal" behavior is quite another thing entirely.
