Does your doctors office have a Gerontologist?

So my doctors office now has a Gerontologist, which is something I never heard of before. She is a nurse practioner who specializes in senior care. My regular GP will still be avaiIable if I prefer or is needed but I was told the Gerontologist will handle my appointments intially.

Truthfully I was a bit put off at first but warmed up to the idea quickly. After spending time with her I truly appreciated dealing with someone who's primary focus is on seniors and has specialized training in that area. I walked out of the office confident she could handle my health care needs, but it was also my first appointment.

Anyone want to share experiences with seeing a Gerontologist? Should I insist on seeing my GP?

Had to add an edit...I looked up the Gerontologist from my doctors office to check her education and experience and turns out she is a fully licensed doctor, not a nurse practioner as I thought.

That’s interesting news. Thanks for sharing. I’ve often wished my healthcare providers were a little more experienced in dealing with the oldest years. I hope you will keep us posted on how it works out for you.
Whether it’s coping with incontenence, family members who suddenly decided to get bossy, helping a formerly athletic person deal with limitations, etc, etc, there seem to be a lot of things that a “generalist” either doesn’t know how to, or isn’t willing to address. I always feel like I’m left to deal with the “old age” stuff with no help.

I have been seeing my GP for 25 years and love her. She’s 10 years younger than me. If a practice ever tried to tell me who I would be seeing versus asking if I wanted to switch I would be finding a new one.

That's how I felt intially, it kind of ticked me off, I instantly decided it was time to change to a new practice. I have been with my GP for probably 15 years and always thought he was great, never a thought of changing. They told me I was more than welcome to stay with my GP if that made me most comfortable.

But you know sometimes the same ole same ole isn't the only or best option. I'm glad I gave her a shot and plan on staying with the practice.
