Dog dangers for callers at people's houses

Before she died a couple months ago, I had a Chow for 15 years, who spent the majority of her time out in the yard. Everyone was afraid of her, other than the few who got to know her. Living alone, I rather liked it that way.
Since she had been "in training" her whole life, she was better behaved than most children OR their parents. When anyone arrived, she sat beside me until told she could move. And unlike my small young dog, she also stopped barking when told.
She WOULD protect me if needed, though that only happened twice in her life. She stood between me and trouble with bared teeth and menacing growl, bur never went after them. I do believe there would have been 50# of angry Chow in their face had they pushed the issue. Her training kept her in place.

My old collie x now passed chased a delivery person around his car last year, he just wanted to sniff and lick his hand, of course the fellow did not know that but out of dozens of visitors he was the only one scared. It all depends upon the attitude of the dog, the owner AND the visitor, he was dead scared before he even got close even with me standing right there, not nice or the proper reaction but I had a hard time not laughing as I restrained him. (The dog not the man!)

I thought we were all conditioned to love collies! I know I was. I probably would have asked him if he was trying to tell me something.

My late husband was a mailman in the summers during college. He told the story of one of his fellow mailcarriers who came back one day with a big ripped hole in the seat of his uniform pants. Everyone wanted to know what had happened, but he was embarrassed to talk about it.

Finally, it came out that he was walking on a sidewalk that ran closely alongside of the porch of a house, when a chihuahua launched itself off the porch and chomped down on the seat of his pants, luckily not getting any butt meat. The dog is hanging on the back of his pants and he's dancing around trying to get it loose without getting bit.

The owner dashes out of the house and screeches, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY DOG???" and comes down off the porch, grabs the dog and pulls hard. Something has to give, and it was his pants.

The guy was forever famous after that as the carrier who got bit in the butt by a chihuahua.

We have some old friends Who Sell Puppies with at least 4 Female adults around.
Its such a high noise level I don't even get out of turbos when Snowball visits them.
They then put some of the loudest in their pens. Energetic dogs nuff said.

Why does the old dog cross the road?
Sure, its not to make new friends.
It keeps you from crossing the road.
He stakes out his territory. You excluded.

Last night the dog (Shadow) long since put to bed started scratching and whining at the GH door so let him back in the house, he went total bearserk, tearing around the L room, rolling, crawling, running etc, strange so let him out to P again.....no not that so what. Then hear scratching against door or cupboard or house but cant tell if its him or something else or where, never did find an answer but got him settled down n we both to bed dont think either one of us slept till at least 11

Then naturally I awoke shortly after 4 with all that and MUCH more going through my brain, lay awake starting to write this note (apart from one quick bathroom trip WITHOUT waking dog) till few minutes before 7 but traveled my life in the meanwhile. Dog led me to Judy (my wife of 40 years now passed and who joined me AFTER I was given my first dog).
That led me to Cubs and Scouts (wow thats been a while) which led me to React and all the fellows I knew there and even down in the bunker on the banks of the Grand River with the cops setting up radios. That led me to the leaders over in England, Scout leaders some of whom I instructed when I was a leader some years after I started there as a boy scout .... which led me to the cub leader who was the scout leaders daughter who led cubs and I 'went out with' for a while ....... I had best stop there for it seems I have just about come full circle.

Very little to do with dogs but I have had one for over 50 years now and my now big 1 year old Collie is the first I got as a youngster and it been a challenge ....a delightful one but definitely challenging at times!

The only dog that ever bit me was a collie, and he crossed the road to do it.
I once had a Basenji walk up my driveway and enter my garage where I was doing something and start growling at me. He lived a couple of streets away so he couldn't have thought it was his territory. It is weird when they go out of their way to be menacing like that.

I put my dogs up after they meet the workers & knew they were allowed to be there. The roofing guys, Dad & sons business, grew up with shepherds & loved to play with our last one.

Our mail lady, who knew our GSD breeder, would come back to the house any chance to see the dog. He would try to crawl in her truck when she stopped.
