Do you remember any family member having doilies?

My grandmother used them, she was born in 1882. My parents were all mid-century modern so none for them, but we kids had to be very careful around their white sectional sofa and turquoise carpeting.

I really could use one on the back of my husband's recliner.

In the Navy while on shore leave in Valetta, Malta I took a bus to "the Old City" of Mdina. While there I came across a couple of women "tatting" doilies. I brought home a 3-piece set (centerpiece and two candlesticks) that are still around here somewhere.

My mother had them on the backs of the sofa and chair when I was little, and on all the dressers.

My grandmothers had them all over the place. If there was a flat surface, there was a doily. One grandmother crocheted beautiful ones, the other bought them.

My great-aunt was a "tidy" hoarder. She saved every phone book, every broken comb or worn-out brush, every piece of mail, every..... She'd put them in boxes, stack them up and put a doily on the box. Every week, she'd wash, bleach and iron the doilies and put them back on the boxes.

I still use them.

Remember the antimacassar covers on upholstered furniture?

They were originally designed to keep Macassar oil from staining upholstery.

I had an elderly great aunt that used to crochet hot pads using bottle caps. She absolutely insisted that all of the caps be from soda bottles, no beer bottle caps allowed!

My grandmother crocheted, knitted, tatted, and quilted. She had very little money, so she would often use her talents to make gifts for the family. Although I do not put doilies out these days, my wife liked the ones my grandmother gave us and had some of them out many years ago. In the guest bedroom, I have a quilt my grandmother made on top of the beige bedspread even now.

Yes, my one grandmother made them and displayed them all over. So pretty, there were.

The other grandmother covered all her furniture in clear plastic covers. (Remember those?) She didn't want anyone soiling her furniture. They were terrible sitting on.

They were a staple for my grandmother and mother. I used them on my bedroom side table or in the bedroom with antique furniture. Because of all the love and skilled involved, I felt bad giving them away. They just weren’t to my taste nor any of the kids.

My mother crocheted a dining room table cloth. It looked lovely at Christmas time topping a red tablecloth.

I’ve seen photos of a crocheted piece framed. Made some interesting art. Also I’ve seen a tablecloth used as a quilt topper.
