Up to a point. But as a senior, I've given myself permission to use certain disposables. Particularly paper towels instead of cloth. I even dry myself with paper towels after a shower. The alternative would be constant laundry, which would mean going up and down stairs, waiting for other tenants to finish, and paying even more for laundry than I already do ($40-$50 a month).
If I were in a nursing home, they'd be using disposable everything.
I have to drive my own recyclables to the depot, because our municipality has no recyclable pickup. Of course, driving there uses gas.
It's good to be aware, but an individual can only do so much.
