Loved him in "Ordinary People". The character he portrays is a great husband and a great father, but his life is coming apart. His marriage is shaky, one son died in an accident and the other one tried to commit suicide. When he tells his son's therapist that he was lucky that he came home early that day and was able to save his son's life, the therapist asks him if he considers himself to be a lucky person. He hesitates for a moment and then says, "I used to". He just played the character perfectly; the kind of man that any woman or child would love to have as a
spouse or parent. Solid, wonderful performance in one of my favorite movies.

I've always been amazed at all of the Canadians in music and showbusiness, that I've been a big fan of, and I never knew that they were Canadians, until later in life, or after they passed away.

In an other article on SF, I listed some of Donald Sutherlands Canadian actor friends, Like Leslie Neilsen, Gordon Pinsent, Christopher Plummer, Bruno Gerusi, Lorne Green, Lloyd Bochner, William Shatner, all of whom cut their teeth in CBC radio dramas and TV shows, long before they ever went to Hollywood. Donald Sutherland never became a US citizen, and he was a Member of the Order of Canada. JimB.

I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. My son told me about it this morning when he was getting ready to go to work. I've always liked Donald Sutherland and loved his smile. I think Klute was the first thing I saw him in. And I watched the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers twice. I didn't realize he was Canadian until I looked at his Wiki page today! 60 years in the business...Hollywood has lost a great one.
