Doorbell Rang Unexpectedly

Friday evening, about 7 pm. I was already in bed, but answered because I never know if it's a neighbor is in distress. It was a solar panel representative canvassing to see if there was any interest of "going off the grid". I was miffed to begin with, but was polite, but said firmly that I wasn't interested (I hate standing there talking to people in my nightgown), but he kept on with his spiel. He said he wasn't the salesman, he was just surveying the neighborhood. If he found any prospective clients, another representative would be around in a few days. He rhapsodized about how economical solar panels were. I don't even remember if he mentioned the company name, but he didn't offer any ID or business card.

Now if he had something I could use and came around at a decent hour....

7 pm is kinda late to be knocking on peoples doors trying to sell or do any kind of survey in my opinion. You were very nice to allow him to talk. It is so dangerous in this day and time to allow anyone to stand there and talk especially since he did not offer you any identification.

I simply do not answer the door if it is evening and I am alone. It is a massive risk, especially if you are in your night clothes.

The other day the doorbell rang as we were preparing lunch. I did answer as it felt safe, husband was in and my dog right behind me. Just a polite young man from a charity. Still, I gave him only two minutes after realising he wanted me to sign for a direct debit. Then I saw him off very quickly by saying I had something on the cooker and I never sign up for direct debits. I shut and locked the door - which is my right.

Signs don't stop most solicitors. I should use these and let them tire themselves out:
They work best if you cite the city ordinance and/or state and/or federal laws on them...laws that prohibit soliciting when a homeowner posts a "No Solicitors" sign.

Like this: Federal laws 492 & sub-law 469, Sate laws 109 - 3028, City Ordinances 106 thru 110. ....I just made those up. You could also add "Punishable by up to 93 days incarceration + $1200 fine".

I don't open the door either. Our area has been plagued with magazine salesmen recently. Apparently they are very rude and keep banging on people's doors even after having it shut in their faces. I think they should fear for their safety because they are going to encounter an angry homeowner who doesn't take to that. I'm surprised they haven't already.

Of all things to sell, there isn’t much of a market for these any more. The other day I realized the grocery stores have just about cleared them out. There aren’t even many near the cashier.

Really makes you wonder if they’re checking out houses.

I have no need to open the door , I can see whose at the door through the video ring doorbell... and speak to them remotely..or not as the case may be.

Deb The video ring doorbell should be a priority for you, living alone. A handyman can install it in a few minutes... ( or you could do it yourself, my daughter did hers herself)... ..

A few weeks ago, I was at an aunt's house when there was a banging at the door. It was a roofer that told her that her roof was in imminent danger of leaking and wanted to fix it. She told him she was busy and closed the door. I'm not the only one plagued by these "drive by" contractors. My thought is if they were any good, they'd have more work than they could handle and wouldn't have to drive around scoping out jobs.

We have those same shyster drive-by contractors here.... since I had the ring doorbell I've had very much less of them knocking the door...
