Dreading My Doggie's Dental Surgery

Our little girl doggie is 12 and needs to have dental surgery. In spite of her age, the vet says one of her teeth is totally rotten so she really has to have the surgery. So she has it this coming Friday. The vet says it'll be fine but I worry about her age.

Our almost ten year old dog went in and had a few teeth pulled. Some teeth had infections below the gum line which really needed cleaning up. Her breath was really bad due to her dental problems but when we got her back, which was the same day, her teeth sparkled and she had the biggest smile.
She had medication for about a week along with some mild local antibiotic gel.

You are a wonderful dog owner Ripley. Some people don’t even notice their dogs teeth rotting. She’ll be fine I’m sure. Just ask lots of questions to ease your worries and concerns. That’s what you pay them for.

My little dachshund is 13 now and I always worry about her going under anesthesia because she is so small at ten pounds, but the vet knows what he's doing and she's always fine and lively when I go to pick her up.

She had surgery for an abscessed tooth a few years ago and when I went to pick her up every last one of her teeth had been pulled. It seems that once inside her mouth the vet could see that gum disease had taken over. I was shocked and upset, but they assured me she would be fine and she has!

She continues to eat well with just a little canned food mixed with her kibble and the shredded chicken I've always topped off her dish of food. In fact I think she's been healthier since then without the recurring dental problems.

Best of luck on Friday. She'll be fine and maybe get to have strained baby food chicken for a few days afterward. Yummy!

We had a Lab who was 12 or 13 at the time and she had to have two extractions within 5 or 6 months of one another. She came through those no problem. The problem was after the second surgery she could no longer have her rawhide chews or beloved pig ears because she didn't have the teeth to chew them.

I'm sorry that both you and your dear doggie
have to go through this.
It would worry me, as well.

But, those surgeons know what they are doing, so it will most likely be fine, as the other posters gave good input about it.
And your dog will probably be much happier, after it's all done.

same with digger now.. he's got a hole in the roof of his mouth.. it was a big hole but it's closed up a lot, but still it means he can only eat the softest of foods, and he can't have his beloved toys in case they get caught up in the hole..

It's not due to lack of Hygene, goodness knows my DD looks after those doggies teeth, as if she'd given birth to them..it's just something that happened with no obvious cause

The dogs I have now have not had dental problems yet. It is a good idea to have their teeth cleaned every couple of years. Two of them are just getting to the point where need to have it done.

My dog I lost some years ago had a couple of bad teeth they discovered during routine cleaning and they were removed at that time. He did very well with the procedure. Had a soft diet for a few days, shredded chicken and rice. I believe he was given some pain meds for a few days as well.

I am sure it will be fine. The vet I am sure has done a complete check up prior to surgery. Mine always had blood work and EKG as he had a heart mummur.
Just make sure to have her favorite soft foods available and be ready to pamper.
If she won't take the pain pills just crush and put in somedthing soft she loves. I use scrambled eggs.

Thanks; it's going to be very pricey but I don't mind about that, I just worry about her age going under general anesthesia. But I'm hoping for the best.
Dental surgery has come a long way over the last decade or two. Their equipment is far better , their procedures are far safer and their meds have even improved. They can even test your dog before the anesthesia to make sure her hearts and lungs are strong enough. It’s not completely fool proof but it at least gives a promising success rate indication.
We will ALL hope the best for her.

Dogs are just like people, we brush our teeth and still get problems. Same with any other illness, the get colds, arthritis, unpset tummies, bladder infections, diabetes Being proactive in the care prevents some of these as they age, same with us.

We had a senior kitty with really foul breath, vet removed several teeth and sweet breath was the result, as well as a much healthier kitty. Because of the dental care she lived to be 21 years old. Trust your vet to take the best care of your pup.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts; she hasn't been acting at all like her teeth were bothering her but I do trust the vet, I don't think he'd lie about her bad tooth and it definitely needs to come out. I can't wait for the surgery to be over, though; it's worrying me more than the surgery (deviated septum) I just had, lol.

Our vet always does bloodwork to make sure the dog is healthy enough for a dental. Amy is 9 and has a heart problem but the recommendation was to still have the dental if her bloodwork was good but it wasn’t.

Her life expectancy is only 2 years so she probably won’t live long enough for her teeth to be a problem. I have had many old dogs have dentals with no issues.,

I am so sorry to hear that her health maybe bad. Don't accept that it may be two years. Humans are also given live expectancy but very much outlive what doctors have forcasted. Just love her, give her the best care possible, she may just surprise you with her strength.

Thanks Blessed! I have her on a liver supplement because that was out of whack, an anal gland supplement because that’s an issue and heart medication. She has food allergies and a sensitive stomach so her food costs 4/can.

My last Maltese with a heart problem died 8 months after diagnosis when she just turned 11. Luckily Amy’s was found earlier.

We all need care, human and animal alike. I treat my dogs like I would my children. If they need medical care, they will have it. I guess that is why I am so frugal with myself. I want to make sure I have the funds I need to make sure I can take care of them. Most people think I am crazy but I say I am the smartest and most prepared of all.

I spent over 3000 when the last dog was lost. I paid for surgery when they could not say he would be alright. It was nothing to me, I just wanted him to come home. He did get home for a couple of days and then I lost him, the internal bleeding continued. It was the best money I ever spent, I got to hold, pet, kiss him. He slept in my bed two more nights. When I had to let him go, he had given me the strength and love to do it.

My first dog ever was a 2 month old Maltese named Mandy who had a serious heart condition which I didn’t know when I bought her and in 2004 after owning her for 2 weeks I spent $4k for heart surgery. People thought I was crazy. She lived to be 15 and was a wonderful companion.

Always worrisome when they have to go under anesthesia, especially at that age. I hope everything goes smooth and she is not in too much pain afterwards. Good luck, hugs for you both. 🧔
