Driving these days.

I've been in three car accidents one car break in, and one vandalism with the past 11 months. Most recently a hit and run last Sat. someone sideswiped and took off. I used to love to drive. Now, I'm becoming tense about it. How's the driving where you are? 😖

In a lifetime of driving I've been rear ended four or five times, scratched the car once on a guard rail, and when I was 18, a minor scrape with another car. Maybe just good luck, but I have to give a lot of credit to having left San Francisco many years ago for a suburban area with calmer drivers, and pretty much zero car break ins. Our current car, a relatively inexpensive Hyundai, has several safety features I love which have become common in new cars.
* Automatic pre-collision breaking
* Freeway lane change warning (beeps if a car is in the blind spot)
* Backup warning if a pedestrian, bicycle, or moving car is approaching or in range
* Freeway Lane departure warning
So, get a new car and move to a quiet suburb. (-8

Small town Americus in rural GA is not too bad but I’ve worked in both downtown Seattle and Houston… was *so* glad to get outta those places… driving (and as far as Seattle—parking) was a daily nightmare! I am not a big city girl for sure 😓

there are many distracted drivers.... saw a guy driving a huge dump truck ( city employee ) eating lunch with a bowl and spoon in his hand while driving...
Not just Cell phones to worry about.... law was passed many years ago but had no real effect.....

i see many cell phone in hand every day.... when losing a battle this state seems to just ignore enforcing laws....

first they discontinued bike helmet enforcement ..... because they decided most that had no helmet were poor
NOW expired tags are a secondary offense basically for same reason..... so i hope if they get into any accident it is totally that persons fault ... since the vehicle is NOT legally licensed to be on street.....
I will be glad when the pendulum swings back to where people are held responsible ....
many drive offs after accidents are UNINSURED motorists

Still not bad here, except in Steamboat proper (resort town). I generally go there only every other week for the library, and groceries, and try to make it in non rush hour times. I love to drive in a spirited style, in performance oriented vehicles, and fortunately still have plenty of places close by where there is little to no traffic.

I was pulling out of the library yesterday, the exit drive goes into a jointly used parking lot. I stopped at the stop sign as a big SUV was cruising thru the parking lot, I watched as the woman driving never looked up from what I would guess was her phone, she literally drove out of her lane into the intersection heading directly into the side of my car. I laid on the horn and she stopped in time but was close enough she couldn't swerve around me, I had to pull into the intersection so she could steer back into her lane. Idiots!

With gas approaching $7 a gallon, not a lot of driving around these parts I'm afraid. Thankfully I was already pretty much a home body, now it's a mission, only go out when absolutely necessary :coffee:. Don...

Thankfully retirement makes it possible to drive during off peak heavy traffic times.
Not unusual though with the lighter traffic to keep up in traffic on the freeways posted at 65 mph, traffic is moving at 80mph or more. Major cross streets posted at 45mph typically traffic moves at 60mph.

No accidents but a few speeding tickets :(

There are major road works on my commute to work.
So many times people are in the wrong lane and without indicating, they cut in front of me as if they have not seen me,
At least 4 times in the last 2 weeks I have had to slam my brakes on heavily because of this happening.
Happened yesterday morning.
Too often people are changing lanes without indicating and going on oblivious to what is happening behind them.

that is everywhere ... it is not that they do not know you are there they just assume you wont mind them forcibly merging......
never had that issue where i used to live but current area people assume you will just let them in...... i used to not let them in when i first moved here....... some were forced to take exit on highway etc..... now i just assume people will try to force issue no one has hit me but darn close .... people just assume they are more important then others ......... no need for me to worry...... rotten fruit usually falls off the tree .......
sooner or later they will get karma.

My driving experience is exactly the same as yours.
After 50 years with no accidents, I had 2 last year. Neither my fault & the 2nd one was a driver deliberately bumping my car & taking off. I got his license number & made a police report & police did nothing.
I always see drivers speeding, near misses & lots of honking.
Since it started 2 years ago, I call it "Covid Crazy."

We have light traffic in our rural area....other than city people heading for the lakes on the weekends. Most of the traffic accidents around here involve the Friday/Saturday night drunks, or people playing with their cell phones. I had a minor wreck about 4 years ago, while driving on some ice....the truck went into a slow skid, and hit a neighbors mailbox....hopefully, that will be it.

Our local traffic is down substantially, due to these high gas prices. We went to town this morning to get our haircuts, and a few groceries, and there was almost no one on the road during the 3 mile drive to town, and only 3 or 4 vehicles on the way back.

Attitudes like that are why this June 7, 2022, we Californians will get rid of 2 progressives big city DA's that will be making national news headlines tomorrow. We working class folks here in the large California urban areas are being victimized by politicians and their law and judicial appointments that are increasingly using "too poor" excuses to allow those breaking laws to face any punishment. And some are of course not legal residents, the other "so just let them go" excuse they use lest advocates bother them. Without enforcement and punishment with some pain, there are just too many cheating, lying, scheming people that have had little ethical interests throughout their lives and wear such as a dog eat dog anything goes attitude, that are not going to comply.
