During the long school summer recess, I would spend most of that time with my grandmother. My mother had passed away when I was nine, Dad looked after me, and my siblings, but he had to continue working, we had no welfare payment for that scenario, so the summer break was with grandmother. I loved it.
Getting there meant catching one train, then changing onto another. Back then it was safe to travel alone, my father would see me off, putting me into the hands of the guard. That same guard would hand me over to a station porter where I changed trains and the porter would hand me on to the guard of the second train. At the end of my journey I caught the bus to grandmother's.
Nobody thought it strange, or unsafe. Most people didn't have a phone. Once ensconced at grandmother's place I would write a letter to my Dad and that's the only way he knew that I was safe. Nowadays my Dad would probably get locked up for neglect.
