Electric company called and said I am overdue paying my bill

Using those dates as a reference, we are not that far into October that the provider should be showing you as past due this quickly. You said in June it was paid on the 12th. Since the 12th of October fell on a Sunday, and today (the 13th) is a holiday, no withdrawal could be made on either date. Maybe tomorrow when you can speak to the bank there will be a reasonable explanation or "fix" for this.
This is what I think as well.
That the payment didn't come out of the bank sooner, due to the weekend along with the bank holiday,
And that the computer for the power company doesn't account for that.

My guess is:
The payment will probably be made tomorrow Tuesday or that night, meaning it would appear on Wednesday.

If the power company computer tacks on a late fee due to that, then you'd need to contest it.

I also did agree with the previous posters, so would initially treat it as a probable scam, till 100% certain it's not.
Now it does seem to have cleared that hurdle, and in my view it's part of the strangeness of current computerized billing processes.

All I can say is Wow - some of these utility companies seem to have some very archaic technology.

Even in my little ole agriculture/cattle county we have more modern technology than what is being described here.

I paid both my water and electric via their portals yesterday, October 13, and the acknowledgments for payment were immediate.

a short time later, the confirming emails were in my inbox. this is standard procedure where I live. Maybe I take too much for granted, in my “backward” agricultural/cattle county where people dress in bib jeans, barn boots, and drive four-wheel-drive pick ups covered in mud.———

I called the automated teller this morning after 9 am (that's when the last business day's activity is transacted). The amount was withdrawn this morning, so I shouldn't be getting any notifications about past due. It just strikes me a jumping the gun to call when the bill was one day overdue.
Thanks for letting us know. So glad it worked out for you, and I certainly agree the power company jumped the gun.

Usually I don't either. It could also be the bank but I'll find out.
I do know on occasion I've gotten refunds on stuff that has popped up on the online statement and then disappeared. It went in but it didn't stay on the statement. I always check my balance to make sure it's in line with what it should be.
