Florida's chief fire marshal and financial officer said there are a 'ton of EVs disabled' from Hurricane Ian.​


A top Florida state official warned Thursday that firefighters have battled a number of fires caused by electric vehicle (EV) batteries waterlogged from Hurricane Ian.

EV batteries that have been waterlogged in the wake of the hurricane are at risk of corrosion, which could lead to unexpected fires, according to Jimmy Patronis, the state's top financial officer and fire marshal.

Hard to tell from this article what has really happened, how many fires and what the results were.

Gasoline powered vehicles also carry a lot of risks and environmental impacts. A more useful thing would be a systematic and even handed comparison. Not sure what the result would be. We seem headed down the electric car route, I suppose we will find out.

I suspect that a lot of vehicles that were flooded will be "cleaned up" and find their way to used car lots all across the nation. Anyone thinking about buying a car would be wise to check it's "history".

Yep, it was a lot worse after Katrina, a lot more flooded vehicles.
 

Yep! Don't know why anyone would ever own or drive a gas powered vehicle that might explode if in an accident, close to a grass fire, around fireworks, have an electrical fire in the passenger area, etc. At least with an EV, one should only have to keep it out of flood waters. Sheesh!

It's not just the flood waters in a coastal area. It's the salt air and high humidity as well.

Also have to wonder what things like extreme changes in barometric pressure do to the batteries. The first part of a hurricane especially before it really kicks in is frequently extreme oppressive humidty and lowering barometric pressure. There was 'a' theory that cabin pressure in an airplane was causing issue with cell phone and laptop batteries a while back. Then when a hurricane and system leaves the area pressure goes back up. He to wonder what that does to a sealed battery in tight spaces designed for high voltage, not the lower voltages of a device or tool.

There are 5 kinds of motorized transport, cars, trains, boats, airplanes and motorcycles. Cars and motorcycles go on land, on roads. Boats go on water. Trains go on land, on tracks. Planes go in the air. The problem with Florida is it cant make up its mind whether it is land or water. The only sensible means of transport in Florida would therefore be a combination car or motorcycle and boat, otherwise known as a duckboat. To the best of my knowledge Tesla does not manufacture duckboats. "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." Galatians 6:7

The highest point of land in Florida is just 345 feet, at Britton Hill. That helps to explain the massive flooding there. JimB.
 
Young generation say that EVs are going to save the planet. I say that the electric grid can't handle all the electricity required to run all those EVs they plan to buy. They never heard of electrical blackouts, like the one that hit the NE USA and south Canada a few years back. Time will only tell who is right. I like to think I am.
 
Were the flaming EVs subject to rain water (fresh) or sea water (salt)? It could make a difference.

35 years in Florida, always in coastal counties, never a direct hit from a hurricane.

No EVs in my future.

You guys are aware that they are starting building prototypes of an electric airplane with electric jet motors? That sounds like it would be fun to fly in the future.

By the way, there are also dangers associated with just getting up in the morning. Your point??
Let's see... the OP was a story one could use in order to make an informative choice for a vehicle that may or may not fit their needs. Your photo and statement is what? Folks should make an informative choice to avoid airplanes with non whites on board? Poor choice there Ben
