That is a title that you didn't hear, but it was one of
Queen Elizabeth ll, as she died in Scotland, she is in
the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, where the public
can pay their respects as she will be lying in St Gile's
Cathedral, until she leaves for London.

If you can get some of the route of the cortège, as
it drove through the highlands to reach Edinburgh
along the most populous route, in order to allow
the people to show their respect, an emotional
experience.

Although the British monarch is meant to be politically neutral, the queen did hint at her views on the constitutional future of the country she reigned over.

In 1977, before a vote on the establishment of an assembly in Edinburgh and as she celebrated her Silver Jubilee, the monarch made a speech emphasising how she was crowned the queen of all four nations.

"Perhaps this jubilee is a time to remind ourselves of the benefits which Union has conferred," she said.

Just before a 2014 vote on Scottish independence, she was overheard expressing her wish that people "think very carefully about the future".

The former Prime Minister David Cameron was later overheard saying Elizabeth had "purred" with happiness when he phoned her to inform her Scotland had voted to reject independence.

All the lovely green grass and trees that you saw on the
TV, should be a clue that there is very little employment,
no factories or engineering plants cover the ground, this
is why many of us had to move, I moved to get a good
job, I had applied to several companies, in Scotland, but
most said that the waiting time for a job would be at
least 5 years.

I came to England and had a job within a week.

I didn't have that problem. I lived in the most industrious city in Scotland, so I had a job.. and there was plenty work to be had back in the 70's.. I moved here when my family moved when my mother died..

Well, what do most of the citizens do to earn a living? Is there a lot of farming in Scotland?

There is employment, but not a lot, I have friends with
degrees from University, who work in security, there are
jobs in retail, vehicle maintenance, building maintenance,
just not enough!

The coal mines are no longer, same for steel works, I was
in the coal mines, but when I was old enough, I went to
the Air Force, where I continued my technical education,
after I left, I returned to England when I couldn't get a
decent job.

There are fewer people living in Scotland than in London.

What keeps the economy ticking over.?

Bellbird,

The Country is supported by the Government in Westminster,
many £Billions are provided annually, more support per person
than in any other part of the UK, lots of things are provided free
of charge in Scotland, Prescriptions, nobody pays for drugs, also
Hospital Car-Parking is free, while here in England the cost to park
at a hospital, it is roughly equivalent to Airport parking.

There is also unemployment benefit is the main support for many
young families and it has always been, many have never had a job,
this suits some, but not me.

I left and travelled the World for employment, I saw many lovely
place and some very hot dusty places, I went back in 2002 but I
could only find temporary work, so I moved again, to England and
London, where I worked till retirement.

I had a friend in the military from Edinburg and flew for the RAF. He told me that his family raised and sold lambs or sheep. Is that still true today? He said that after he left high school, he went to England and attended a university there when he applied to the RAF and was accepted and sent to flight school. Had he not done that, he may have ended up being a sheep farmer like his dad and brother.

Been There, there are lots of sheep farms in Scotland,
it was in Edinburgh where "Dolly", the sheep came, it
was the first Clone and lived for years, it also had lambs.

fuzzybuddy, "Scottish Independence", is a pipe dream
of the S.N.P Scottish National Party, they had referendum
in 2014 and lost, they want to break away from the UK, to
get the referendum, they said that it would be one in a
generation, but when the leaders changed, the new one
started again, demanding another vote, even though the
last poll suggested that 64% didn't want it and only a few
did, with a lot of maybes.

To try and push the first vote through, the dropped the
age to voting age down to 16 years, even that failed, if
they did get independence, they would have no income
as Westminster would stop the hand outs.

Thanks for that Mike, that is a surprise, I had always thought Scotland supported itself with industry etc. It's a wonder Westminster doesn't put the squeeze on for Scotland to become independant, instead of the other way round. What does Westminster gain from it in the way of finance.?

Scottish Independence
Just an uninformed opinion from an outsider, but even after watching and much enjoying both Braveheart and Rob Roy. And being a direct descendant of Rob Roy, proud of my Scottish heritage. I don't think its a great idea.

I'd prefer not to see the balkanization of the UK. I think more united is almost always better. For the same, admittedly uninformed, reason I thought the UK's departure from the EU was unwise.

You are in New Zealand Bellbird, a land that I never got
to visit, unfortunately, but I have met and worked with
several people from your fair land and all told me that
New Zealand is very similar to Scotland, this fact is often
stated in literature and TV programmes including "Coast"

Similar climate, similar mountains and similar greens all
over the countryside, the only things, (thank goodness),
that are not similar, are the Earthquakes and Volcanoes.

The thing that keeps us together, is history, which is
fascinating reading.

Mike.

I enjoyed the programme Coast. The bottom of the South Island would have similar weather to the UK, but the rest of the country is somewhat different.
" almost the whole of New Zealand is warmer and sunnier than the UK. The driest weather is found in the east (Christchurch and Napier, for example) and the warmest weather is found in the north (Auckland and Napier, ).
Many of the Scottish immigrants settled in Dunedin, in the South Island, many still do.
its name comes from Dùn Èideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh,
