Ella Fitzgerald

I'm 70. So, I grew up with the Beatles, Stones, etc. I loved Motown. Yet, I got to say for just plain beautiful singing, it's Ella Fitzgerald. I didn't like the majority of the music she sang, but her voice- Oh, God! You could see other singers taking in huge breath and forcing the sound out of them. Ella just opened her mouth and this warm, perfect sound fell out. When she sang, it was absolute perfection. Nobody was ever going to sing it better.

Ella is one of my all-time favorites, Fuzzybud. Female singers just don't sing like that anymore. Or I should say, they don't just sing. The vocal acrobatics they do now range from monotonous and extremely irritating.

I do not like the kinds of music she sang. But damn it, her voice just so beautiful. When she was alive, I was a kid into rock.
Even as a "Stones" loving kid, I recognized Ella was a great, one of a kind talent. Duh! The moment Ella opened her mouth, you knew that.

Young female singers these days have the opposite of vibrato. Many of them sound constipated to me. Yes, I know that's crude. But that's exactly how they sound. Like they're squeezing a lot of volume out through a very tiny opening.

I'm not that familiar with Ella's singing. But that's what singing is supposed to be like, as fuzzybuddy describes it so well. Just open the mouth and the music comes out.
