Sir Elton John has accused the Vatican of hypocrisy after it banned priests from blessing same-sex unions while “happily making a profit” from his 2019 biopic Rocketman.

The British musician claimed that the Catholic Church had made handsome returns after “investing millions” in the film, which ends with the singer finding happiness through his marriage to David Furnish. John was an executive producer.

The Vatican issued a decree this week telling priests that it was “illicit” to bless same-sex unions or marriages and God “cannot bless sin”. The ruling came five months after Pope Francis endorsed civil unions as a way for gay people to “be in a family”.

My dad was married in a Catholic ceremony and had two kids in the 1930s. His wife developed into an alcoholic. He had to divorce her. He gained custody of his kids, and married my mom, who had me and my brother. Men in the 1930s did not get custody of their kids. My dad was extremely religious, but since he was "divorced", he was not allowed the "sacraments" in church. Only the rich could afford to get a Papal Annulment- still are ,too, So my dad spent the rest of his life with the woman he loved, knowing he would never see "heaven". Oh, yeah, BTW, the priest , who taught my religion class, was having an affair with my classmate's mother.

Sounds like some church official wasn't really paying attention to what the movie was about when he added it to the list of films for the Vatican to invest in. Maybe he never watched it, and thought it was about a space adventure hero?

So many people rely on the Pope for guidance, so he needs to be consistent. He isn't changing the Catholic stance on same-sex marriage and he is supposed to receive advice directly from God, so God hasn't changed his mind, despite current trends.
Why can't homosexuals be content with a civil union, why is it so important to be married in a religious ceremony? Marriage is a union between a man and a woman...that's all there is to it.

I divorced my first husband, he got an annulment from the Catholic Church, he did not get custody of our son, and he was far from rich. I was remarried in the church so there might have been a different issue. But idk.

Marriage should be a totally civil affair and nothing to do with religion. It's to do with the commitment of one person to another - a god doesn't enter into it. Thankfully in many civilised countries, it is possible to have a civil wedding, mixed or same sex. Here in Scotland, Humanist marriages outnumber all types put together. I wish I had that option when Mrs.L and I got married 47 years ago. We we were married in a Presbyterian church because it was the only reasonable option. Haven't been to church since.
