Employers Asking About Salary History

They ask so they can offer you the same salary or slightly higher.
16 states have banned this question. It should be illegal. I've always found it to be a stupid question. When I was applying for employment & I was asked this question, I would usually reply, but sometimes I would add, "Well, I wasn't paid what I was worth; that's why I left."

Back when I was interviewing and hiring people I always asked the question. Helps to understand if you can afford someone and how their current employer values them.

For someone I wanted to hire it was just the beginning of a negotiation, nothing more. I also always asked them how much they were looking for.

Mostly, it helps to understand how cheap their former employer was & why they left.
 
It's rather like seeing a doctor for a second opinion & the doctor asks, "What was your first doctor's opinion?"
If you answer that question, you won't get a second opinion; you'll get a tape recording of your first opinion.
 
I never needed to ask that question in an interview because it was included in the Work History section of our job applications. More important to me was how many hours they worked; when they earned more, did they work less?
