Europe is baking in the heat

Hoping our British members stay safe. It's not as hot yet as France and Spain as well as other European countries, but it's not over yet.

Some people have also died from swimming in rivers and lakes that aren't safe.
There are wildfires in Spain.

I recall back in 2003 thousands of people died in France from the last heat wave. I saw a the temp today in France of 45C which is 113F. They are not used to this and not as many have A/C as we do.

I didn't know it could get that hot there! I thought they had the same kind of temperatures as we do here where I live. We have not ever had 113 degrees, at least in my lifetime. I think 101 was perhaps the most a long time ago and that was rare. How unfortunate for them to have to be in an oven like that. I hope they will all be okay. I know Hollydolly is in Spain now and hope she stays cool and safe.

Just got back today Ruthanne....it was 100 plus in Spain and we'd read about the hot temps in the uk while we were gone , so when we flew back I didn't take a cardigan with me, just travelled back in shorts and sleeveless top, expecting it to be really warm when we landed in the early hours of the morning. WoW!! It was sooooo cold, I thought I was going to freeze to death when we came out of the airport, !! I have no idea what the temps had been but they were nothing close to what they were in Spain.

However today has been quite pleasant at mid to high 80's and it's expected to be hotter tomorrow, so not as much a shock to the system as it might otherwise be...

yes we do quite often get these high temps at least here in the South, ..North of the country rarely get temps this high, and especially not the North of Scotland, who had probably for the first time ever higher temps than the south of England today!...the natives wouldn't have known what to do with themselves LOL... we were joking that they probably don't even sell Sun lotion up there, it's so rare to get such hot weather. :D

All joking aside, the extreme heat here is much more of a problem than it would be in say Florida, or California, or Africa or Southern Spain because Northern European homes are not generally fitted with AC units or fans of any kind ..and of course most have fitted carpets, and thick insulation in the walls..so trying to sleep here is much more difficult in the heat compared to Spain, where we have AC and cold marble flooring!!

We are in winter here in Australia however our summer was extreme we had a few days of 47-48 c those sort of temps have never been recorded where I live since records started being kept, it was horrible as overnight temps didn’t drop below the mid 30’s We live close to a beach and people took beach shelters down there to sleep on the beach ,which is a nice quiet Bay Area
in a country area

It is odd to us who have not had a house that wasn't air conditioned in the last 46 years. Most of our cars have been air conditioned with the exception of a red MG roadster in the early 80s.

They had a bunch of heat last year too, but not as much. We had originally planned a trip to Switzerland this year (have to put it off until next year), and I was reading all the reviews that people posted on various Swiss hotels and the reviews were largely how it was too hot to sleep, no A/C (except in some very high-end hotels), and not even fans available. I guess I'll be reading those same reviews this fall again when I start planning for next year. Even up in the mountains it was far too warm and not cooling at night as is the norm.

It's been in the 90's here in PA. Very unusually warm for this time of the year. The pool is getting a workout, that's for sure.

Heat wave here in Maryland. Not unusual for summer. Everything is air conditioned, of course, so if you stay indoors you're all right. The evenings are mostly pleasant.

Los Angeles had a quick but brutal heat wave in early June, but since then it's been quite comfortable. Highs from 75-90 and lows from 55-65, along with low humidity.

I feel for people in Europe, especially in areas without air conditioning. In cold weather it's fairly easy to bundle up, but when it's hot there's only so much clothing that can be stripped off. Hot with high humidity is the absolute worst.

We had in the 90's today..it was very hot, !! and no luxury of AC in the house to cool down.

We have AC in our cars..but we can't drive around all day......I've had all the windows open all day and standalone fans by each window circulating air, and it's helped a little... but I wish I was back in Spain, at least I would be cool indoors. Five have died so far from the effects of the heat here in England !

It's past 11pm now and still 70 degrees with 64% humidity outside and even warmer indoors...!!

Oooh wee. I do not envy those folks! I just hope there aren't a lot of deaths because of it; that people are careful and cognizant of what to do in extreme heat. What's August going to be like?! Just heard the other day there were already three hot car deaths (children) in the same area. I don't understand this. As many warnings about this that have been on the news, how could parents not be aware?!

Today was actually nice here! Somewhere in the mid-80's, with a pleasant breeze. But... tomorrow it's supposed to go back up into the mid-90's, and stay there for a while. Thousands of people flock to the Mall every year, for a folk life festival and the fireworks on the 4th. I hope they all survive.

Ugh., Holly. 5 died, omg!

It's down to 76f now and under another severe thunderstorm warning- that was supposed to happen last night but didn't. Sunny all morning but clouds coming by now.

I'm glad you got back okay and safe! :)

I live in southern Arizona and from May to September the average is about 104 but it has gotten as high as 115 and 117 (rarely). Except for July-Sept (the monsoon season) it's a pretty dry heat of about 13%. BUT, I would never live here if I didn't have AC (especially when you get old). Those countries are not used to that kind of heat and most don't have any kind of cooling mechanisms. I feel bad for them.

Been a Hottie today... !! Only mid 80's, but my garden faces south west which gets all the sun, with lots of mature trees which protect it from any cooling breeze from the humidity .. so it's been like a furnace out there.. gonna be hotter tomorrow!!
