Evening excitment...fire in building community room

A couple hours ago fire alarms in my building started blaring. Few minutes later, I hear fire trucks. Turns out there was a small fire in the community room because some smoker could not be bothered to go outside to smoke, like the rules say. Nobody hurt, of course, and we did not have to evacuate the building.
So, it will just be an interesting topic of conversation tomorrow.

So glad to know it didn't spread far and you are okay Marie. Fire is scary, I respect it very much.

I'm sure glad it wasn't any worse Marie!

They need a live security guard.
Great Idea NOT.
A live security guard for 24 hours not happening. Three guards on 8 hour shifts with additional to fill in on the regular guard days off. Wages will come out of residents rent so that means raising rents to cover the cost.
Why not terminate the residency of the person that didn't follow the rules that are in place to protect the rest of the residents.

The only issue is that when we use our key card to open the secure door, it stays open for a bit before it closes...we have a lot of people in wheelchairs and other slow movers here. I have never checked to see if we can push the door closed to override the auto close.
Plus..we are HUD (housing and urban development) for lower income seniors....probably no budget for a guard,
Not sure if there will be repercussions for the tenant he followed in. I think best management can do is to remind us to be more aware of who is in foyer.

OMG, good thing it was noticed before it got out of hand. People could have been killed, the rest left homeless. 😥
We were lucky that one of the maintanence guys was in the building, getting things ready for the snow we are getting today. He was in the maintanence office when the alarms went off. Grabbed the fire extinguisher and ran in. Of course, the LOL moment came while he was spraying the fire, happened to be directly underneath a sprinkler....when the sprinkler activated

Well..they have already caught the guy. The apartment manager had a good view of him on the tapes in the foyer and lobby. He apparently waited in the foyer, and followed someone in....we have a key card to open the door to the main lobby.
He is going to be arrained today

BATAVIA/Man arrested for arson in Washington Towers chair fire – Video News Service
I would never have thought of an arson attempt.

My fear is always a push-in robbery or assault when someone is lurking around the security door.

I'm glad that everyone is safe and sound.

Most apartment complexes here in Florida have a clause in rental agreements that any resident caught smoking anything on any part of the property be it interior or exterior will be served with a ten day vacate notice.
