I was watching a movie last night and the history of the Bellamy Salute and the Pledge of Allegiance was a big part of it. It caught my interest, I googled it, and it was one of those OMG moments. I thought it was interesting. Basically it was in use in this country (USA), was adopted by the Italians and Germans during Mussolini's and Hitlter's regime (the extended right hand in Hail Hitler) , and was then replaced in the USA by the Right Hand Over the Heart. I had never heard of that and found it quite interesting.

Interesting. As a student of history this is something I never heard of or read. Thanks.

As a school child we would assemble each day on the playground and before marching off to our classes we would recite a pledge in this form - "I honour my God, I serve my King, I salute the flag." Later the word Queen replaced King. I don't remember where my hand was placed. I have a vague recollection that we actually saluted the flag like little soldiers.
