Here's a quick look at the evolution of the telephone. The oldest type I remember having was the one you physically dialed with your finger. I remember the rotery phone, but I was 12 before I was allowed to even touch phone, and I admit, for some reason phones scared me. I still will let anyone else answer the phone. :tongue:

We had the big old wood one that hung on the wall. We cranked it once to get operator and gave her the number. We were on a 5 or 6 party line. I think our ring was one long and two short rings.

The telephone was actually one of those wonderfully accidental inventions. Ol' Al was working on a device to help the hard of hearing. His wife suffered from hearing loss. While mucking around in the lab, he spilled some battery acid and called to his assistant for help. Watson heard him through the receiver of their experiment and thus . . . 911 came to be.
