Jan 31 (Reuters) - More than 100,000 Americans died from diabetes in 2021, marking the second consecutive year for that grim milestone and spurring a call for a federal mobilization similar to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

"The large number of diabetes deaths for a second year in a row is certainly a cause for alarm," said Dr. Paul Hsu, an epidemiologist at UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health. "Type 2 diabetes itself is relatively preventable, so it's even more tragic that so many deaths are occurring."

In a new report, the National Clinical Care Commission created by Congress said that the United States must adopt a more comprehensive approach to prevent more people from developing type 2 diabetes, the most common form, and to help people who are already diagnosed avoid life-threatening complications. About 37 million Americans, or 11% of the population, have diabetes, and one in three Americans will develop the chronic disease in their lifetime if current trends persist, according to the commission.

They do say TYPE 2 is relatively preventable ..... but forget to say how it is closely related to obesity.....
why do they continue to dance around the fact and address the overweight issue in PUBLIC health.

Article seems to suggest as well that deaths could have been counted in BOTH categories...... COVID deaths and Diabetes deaths...once again making data suspect.
I would think a 100K deaths is something we should have accurate data and a plan to work on.

Data at the CDC clearly indicates that Obesity is the root cause for about 1/3rd of the nations health problems and costs. Yet, almost half of our population is substantially overweight....among people of ALL ages.

If we are ever going to get the nations health under control, we need to have a "War on Fat". However, it seems that it is politically incorrect to engage in any kind of "fat shaming".

So long as older people sit on the couch, snacking and glued to the TV, and younger people spend most of their day "texting and tweeting", things will only continue to get worse.

Yes, it's wrong to "fat-shame". I wonder why slim people seem to be so "concerned" about the overweight. Are they also just as concerned about cancer, liver disease, MS??

Because overweight people also have those problems and so do normal weight. Whether it's politically correct or not doesn't matter as much as it's insensitive to an overweight person. When are people going to stop heaping their crap on the overweight.

People with diabetes come in all sizes.

Well, our weight is something that we have control over, but only to the same extent that drug addicts have control over their drug use. Overeating is often a biproduct of emotional issues in that it's a way to ease the pain of depression or other negative emotions — especially when it involves fatty foods that raise endorphin levels in the brain.

Usually, overweight people don't cause other people problems but sometimes they do, such as when their body mass extends into other people's space, like on a crowded airplane or bus. In that case, it's inconsiderate of them for force us to make allowances and adjustments to accommodate them. It's as bad as somebody smoking and blowing smoke in your face, or farting. Actually, it's worse. Now, I'm not talking about somebody who's maybe 50 pounds overweight, but if you're 100 pounds or more overweight, maybe you (not you in particular, but the overweight person) should look into why they need to eat so much.

We can control cancer to some extent by not smoking or drinking heavily, but many types of cancer are caused by factors beyond our control.

All that said, it's not easy to overcome psychological and emotional problems. I know that from experience. There's no magic pill or miraculous therapy at this point. Some day, with advances in neuroscience, that will change. I wish that day would come while I'm still here on earth, but I'm not holding my breath.

And why is it your "concern?". Let them deal with it themselves. They know how and have heard all "your" hype.

it is a public health crisis according to the CDC

"Obesity is a complex health issue resulting from a combination of causes and individual factors such as behavior and genetics. Behaviors can include physical activity, inactivity, dietary patterns, medication use, and other exposures. Additional contributing factors include the food and physical activity environment, education and skills, and food marketing and promotion.

Obesity is serious because it is associated with poorer mental health outcomes and reduced quality of life. Obesity is also associated with the leading causes of death in the United States and worldwide, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer."

I am not slim nor am I fat shaming... weight issues can be due to many things.
It is a PUBLIC health concern is is a HUGE cost driver in healthcare ... we all pay for one way or another....
It just seemed a large # of deaths that could be discussed ....

This has been listed on the CDC agenda for many years .... along with other items. Is the concern for PUBLIC health only valid on specific items not all listed on the CDC site....
I am just curious as to where is the incentive programs or proposed mandates to combat those issues ......

Data at the CDC clearly indicates that Obesity is the root cause for about 1/3rd of the nations health problems and costs. Yet, almost half of our population is substantially overweight....among people of ALL ages.
I hear everyday the costs associated by those who chose to not vaccinate ... and they should pay for themselves
but as noted 1/3 costs can be traced to obesity issues but if anyone dares speak up they are ostracized as mean and fat shaming..

I try to take the attention-grabbing headlines with a little bit more than a grain of salt.

We should all do what we can to preserve our health in order to prolong our life but the fact is that we are all going to die of something.

Here are some numbers from 2020.

Number of deaths for leading causes of death:

  • Heart disease: 696,962
  • Cancer: 602,350
  • COVID-19: 350,831
  • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 200,955
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 160,264
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 152,657
  • Alzheimer’s disease: 134,242
  • Diabetes: 102,188
  • Influenza and Pneumonia: 53,544
  • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 52,547

I blame our gooberment as much as anyone. Take note of the Food Pyramid from a few years ago. Is the Commission created by Congress what it seems to be, or is it a mechanism established for drug and food companies that will provide donations back to the Congress critters?

Don't know, just thinking out loud. Follow the money.

As soon as diabetes is declared a pandemic, there will be a vaccine for it.
It doesn't have to work; it just has to be available.

Yes, my research on cancer and Covid19 numbers totally agrees with you. After my wife passed away from cancer I found out that over 3,000 people die every year from cancer in my province here in frozen Canada. For comparison, 1562 people have died from Covid19 since it started. That means, 781/year have died from Covid19 while in the same period, over 3,000 have died from Cancer. However, due to media control, cancer death are not "sexy." My statement here is not politically correct; but if you ask me, I am a lot more afraid of dying of cancer than of Covid19 and all the rest of those variants; statistically speaking!

Hi Irwin, yes, obesity is something we have control over in as much as what we have been formerly told by doctors. Here is the correct info. It is hard when one does not have good advice. I got diabetes several years ago and now just understand what I must do to control and reverse it. I just spent 20 days on and intermittent fast with one keto meal a day (OMAD). I did a 48 hour no food fast in the middle. I was prescribed 90 units a day of insulin previously. During my fast, for the entire 20 days I never took more than 10 units. That is under 10 units for the entire fast of 20 days! That is about 1,790 units of insulin I did not have to take. I lost a little weight too. Bonus!

One's body first eats the sugar caused by sugar and carbs. Then it goes for the fat after 12 hours. Between 12 and 16 hours growth hormones spike. This is responsible for growth, cell repair, metabolism, and body composition. Between 16 and 24 hours, ketones are released to burn fat. After 24 hours fat stem cells are released. Fat stem cells are the disease killers. Some people have them injected but during fasting these are your own stem cells that are created.

Sugar and carbs cause fat and a fatty liver. Scientists are finding that sugar and carbs are also responsible for causing cancer.

Most doctors are not giving their diabetic patients this information. If you can find a lo-carb doctor, you can overcome carb addiction.

Primarily, it is what we put in our bodies that is causing diabetes for Type 2 diabetics. Other things like cortisone, and Agent Orange, among other things, were found to trigger diabetes.

Neuroscience can tell us what the result is but generally not the ways to keep it from happening. Big companies load foods with carbs and sugar into to feed the addiction and keep people buying their products. Sugar is in a number of "boxed" products.

I started my fasting lifestyle slowly, first missing breakfast, then missing 2 meals per day and then having only one meal a day. I started out slow and became more confident as time went on. At first I did not cut out the carbs. This last fast was no carbs, Keto. I found it is important to take a break even from intermittent fasting. The spirit needs a chocolate frosted donut from time to time. 💖 :)

**If you decide to fast consult a licensed, qualified physician first. This is important because they will help you be more successful and can watch your health.
