Explosion, Fires Erupt After Small Plane Crashes In Northeast Philadelphia

An explosion rocked Northeast Philadelphia after a small plane crashed into a densely populated area, igniting multiple fires and injuring people both in the air and on the ground, multiple outlets are reporting.

The aircraft went down near Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard just after 6 p.m. on Friday, Philadelphia police told 6abc Action News.

The plane had two people aboard, police told CBS Philadelphia. Several other individuals on the ground were also injured, though their conditions have not been disclosed.

Multiple homes caught fire following the crash, prompting a massive emergency response, according to videos of the scene of PFD and PPD outlets report. Police and fire crews remain on scene as the situation unfolds.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Daily Voice has reached out to the Philadelphia Police Department, Philadelphia Fire Department, FAA, NTSB and the Philadelphia International Airport but has not heard back at the time of reporting.

This is a developing story, so check back here for updates.

Seeing on several online sources that it was a medical transport plane with two pilots, two medical staff, the patient and a family member. The plane reportedly experienced an in air explosion (not verified!) before crashing into the city.

RIP those killed.

Recent reports have the fires under control in an apparently high density neighborhood ie businesses and residents.

Horrific video shows a nose dive almost straight into the ground. They say the flight lasted less than a minute after takeoff.

Pediatric patient on flight was returning to Mexico after ‘life-saving treatment'

By Josh Kleinbaum

A pediatric patient who received care for a life-threatening illness in the United States was aboard the Learjet 55 that crashed in Philadelphia, according to Shai Gold, spokesman for Jet Rescue Air Ambulance.
The girl, one of six people on the flight, was returing to Tijuana, Mexico. The others on the plane included her mother, a pilot, a copilot, a doctor and a paramedic, Gold said. Jet Rescue Air Ambulance does not believe anyone on the plane survived the crash.
"All I can say is, the patient was sponsored by a third-partner charity to undergo life-saving treatment in the U.S.," Gold said. "She did her course of care. She was going home.
"She fought quite a lot to survive, and unfortunately, this tragedy on the way home."
Due to privacy law, Gold said he could give no more details on the patient's condition or treatment.
So, so sad :(

OMG! This is the first I'm "hearing" about this! I didn't get to watch GMA this morning or read any of my news apps. Back to back airplane tragedies. It's just too much! There seems to have been mishaps involving aircraft every other day lately. I've had a personal boycott of the airlines for over a decade and this makes me more likely to stay off planes. But my loved ones travel by plane, so all I can to is pray for their safety.

This is something that can happen anywhere at any time, has been happening more frequently and it's frightening! When I see a plane above, I literally point to it and say "Stay up there!" I've been doing that for years. I hope those injuried aren't hurt badly. I feel so bad for those who lost their homes and belongings all in an instant.

I never flew a Learjet, but I did fly a Gulfstream. These business jets are very safe and very comfortable.

I will be glad when the NTSB completes their investigation and tells us the cause. Seeing as how the plane was in the air for only seconds it sounds to me like the plane went into a stall as soon as it got airborne. It’s kind of early to be guessing what went wrong, but I have to wonder if the plane was configured properly for takeoff. I did check and Learjet does have a warning to the pilots if the plane isn’t configured properly.

There was a local, similar crash years ago. Only barely minutes in the air and down it came. It was later determined to have incorrect fuel loaded at the last stop.
