Facebook... how can they do this?

I'm definitely an outlier in this group, because I use Facebook a lot....to keep up with family and friends and watch interesting videos (I love cat and dog videos).

What I won't do is buy anything that's offered on Facebook. I've made that mistake and won't do it again. Facebook makes no effort to be sure their advertisers are reputable businesses.
Lol I had to Google "outlier" and got: "An outlier is a data point that significantly deviates from the general pattern or average of a dataset."
Back on topic: I do like the FB animal postings and videos, and the abundant humor memes. However, I've noticed a big decline in postings from family and friends, guessing they've become disenchanted with all of the Meta shenanigans and commercialization.

It seems like Facebook IS putting more commercial types of content out now, for whatever reason, and less of personal content from people.
What I do is just go to my friends list and work my way through it, and visit the pages i want to . Some are more active on FB, so I visit them more often, and some I check just occasionally.
This way, I am not as apt to miss something that someone posts that i wanted to see.

I quit Facebook back in 2016, it got too political & some of the responses were nasty. I had been planning to quit prior to this time. Finally had enough, my family knew I would answer an email but nothing more. Just realized it's been 9 years & haven't missed anything. The fault isn't Facbook's, it's just a venue, my friends & family corrupted it for me.

I'm actually surprised at how many here don't use facebook anymore, but what we have is probably not representative of the population at large. I started an account 8 or 9 years ago for the purpose of reconnecting with an old flame. Once we reconnected I used facebook for a couple of months, and then disconnected (from facebook, not my old flame). I didn't find facebook that interesting. Although my circle of friends were not combative or offensive, but just about chatting and weather reports. OK, it was [NOT] as trivial as that, but it didn't interest me.

I try to stay off of Facebook since I'm not a social person, but it is nice to see the pictures of my niece's kids and my daughter's birth family's activities.

I'm forced to use Facebook by one game that I like to play, because my team uses Facebook Messenger to communicate.

Many years ago I'd bought a little horse and when her hair shed out in the spring I found that she had a brand, and Facebook was super useful for finding her breeder's Facebook page and the breeder helped me find a buyer when I wanted to sell her.

Also I used to visit the Facebook site for the stable I used to ride at -- though that got depressing because all the horses of my generation had died off, which was a sad shock to me, gosh that must have been 18 years ago by now, I suppose a whole new generation of horses has come and gone since then.

I once tried to sell some graphics for mugs, T-shirts, posters on line but the trick was you had to have tons of followers on social media to be successful. I had about three friends on Facebook so it didn't work.

The problem I had with Facebook was with people. I happen to have friends, who love to send stuff. My ex sent things like a 2 hour video of monkeys in Japan. During the election, she went into hyperdrive on her keyboard. The others were just as bad. I can live without reading the 100 unbelievable facts about earthworms. And no, I'm not taking the time to learn about all the ins & outs of Facebook. I don't bother ever connecting to Facebook.

I never used Facebook until I had my first heart surgery. I was laid up, bored, and had nothing better to do.

I was pleasantly surprised how many of my cousins and extended family I get to keep in touch with now.

I have cousins I would only make contact with at family gatherings. Now we keep up weekly, sometimes daily.

Also, people I went to school with. It's funny to see them as old people. Just like me.

I have 64 Facebook friends. I'm cool.

I go on Facebook several times a day. If there any problems with the ap well I guess that I am oblivious to it. Great for keeping up with friends and family, watching quick but usually interesting random youtube snippets, and playing several versions of solitaire. What's not to like? I'm oblivious to the advertising if there is any (I don't know because I must have trained my brain to totally ignore it).

Facebook has solitaire?

Oh sure. They show up as "your shortcuts" on the left side of the screen. There are dozens of versions (I like the solitaire tower and the spider solitaire ones). Just don't ask me how I got them to show up on my screen!
Once you start being interested in something, Facebook algorithm recognizes it and sends you more of that kind of content. I enjoy horse-related videos, and I belong to FB groups from Washington and Idaho, so I get sent those kinds of pages and videos.
If you watch cooking videos, then facebook sends you more of these, and if you play some kind of games online, then facebook would probably send you those, too.

I am interested in old world buildings and Tartaria, so I receive links and videos for that as well. Pretty much, Facebook will give you anything you show an interest in learning more about.

I use FB mainly to keep up on a superficial level for sure with people I know back East. Otherwise I wouldn't use it.
