They're some of the most popular social media apps around the world, but it appears Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger have all crashed.

According to DownDetector, the issues started at around 16:44 BST (11:44 ET), and are affecting all users of the social platforms globally.

The three social media services, all owned by Facebook, run on a shared back end infrastructure, and other Facebook-owned services are also down.

Soon after the first report came through, the hashtag #facebookdown was trending on Twitter, with users worldwide reporting issues connecting.

Facebook is yet to comment on the outage.

We can blame it on the planet Mercury ... it's in retrograde right now - and strange things happen

Whether you're someone who is known for asking for a person's exact time and place of birth within five minutes of meeting them or you have been asked those questions and have absolutely no idea why a stranger at the bar would need that information, you've most likely heard of the phenomenon known as Mercury retrograde, along with the mayhem that is said to accompany it. This strange event, often dreaded by astrologers, refers to an optical illusion in which Mercury appears to move backward in its orbit in relation to Earth. Astronomers call it "apparent retrograde motion," and it's not exclusive to the planet Mercury. To astrologers, however, every last one of Mercury's periods of retrograde causes inexplicable mishaps and tribulations. So if you're someone who is fiercely determined to avoid as many obstacles sent down by the universe as possible, you'll want to know exactly when you should be on the lookout for these planetary changes in the year 2022.

I noticed that, it wouldn't work on my phone. I haven't tried it on my computer yet.

Just tried to reach fb on my computer and it says it cannot be reached. I wonder what happened. Surely it will be on the 6pm news tonight.

I haven't looked at Facebook for ages. Today I wanted to have a peek as I know someone who is walking the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain and she posts photos there. So, Facebook is down. Can't say I miss those photos of young people screaming when they are intoxicated or the dogs driving cars. I know there is more to Facebook than this but I seem to be cursed with too many bad photos.

I know we can't go back to the "horse and buggy" era but I often think that the world would be a better place without social media. Social media is pretty good if you want to brag about your dog, your cat, your recent holiday to Disneyworld or the new car you bought. However, it spreads rumours and misinformation. Recent examples, are rumours what happens to you when you get the vaccine, where to go if you want to riot and many other examples.

I've had a Facebook account since 2007, which I use mainly for keeping touch with a good handful of Internet friends and associates. Also watching a few videos, HGTV program posts, and things of that nature.

Otherwise, I don't accept the zillions of friend requests from people I don't know, nor play the games — so I don't get bombarded with a lot of weirdness. Works for me.

I know we all laugh about these things, and I do too.. and I only use whatsapp out of all those things that have gone down today... but really probably WhatsApp is the one which is of any real worth to people who live alone. It's basically a Free text service..so in that way people can be in contact at all times of day or night with loved ones or friends or even carers ... ..

For the rest, Instagram, FB, etc..I couldn't care less...

Just for the record we're still down here in my area, dunno about the rest of the world ...
