Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are DOWN: worldwide

European politicians call for Facebook investigation after whistleblower revelation

BRUSSELS/STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Two members of the European parliament have called for an investigation into allegations by a whistleblower that Facebook prioritised profits above the public good.

The whistleblower, Frances Haugen, who had worked as a product manager on the civic misinformation team at Facebook, shared internal documents with newspapers and attorneys general from several U.S. states.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are down for users around the world, with the first report of problems coming in this afternoon.

According to DownDetector, the issues started at around 16:44 BST (11:44 ET), with nearly 80,000 reports for WhatsApp and more than 50,000 for Facebook.

NetBlocks, which tracks internet outages and their impact, estimate the outage has already cost the global economy $160m (£117 million), and sent the Facebook share price down by more than five per cent.

The exact cause of the outage has not been confirmed by Facebook, but one expert said the problem may have been caused by an internal error.

John Graham-Cunningham, the chief technology officer of web security firm CloudFlare, said Facebook made a series of updates to its border gateway protocol (BGP) which caused it to 'disappear' from the internet.

The BGP allows for the exchange of routing information on the internet and takes people to the websites they want to access.

Dane Knecht, senior vice president of the firm, said earlier the Facebook Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routes had been 'withdrawn from the internet.'

Cybersecurity expert, Kevin Beaumont, wrote on Twitter: 'This one looks like a pretty epic configuration error, Facebook basically don't exist on the internet right now. Even their authoritative name server ranges have been BGP withdrawn.'

Facebook staff were also reportedly unable to get in to their offices today to evaluate the extent of the outage because their security passes were not working.

Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, which are all owned by Facebook, run on a shared back-end infrastructure, creating a 'single point of failure' according to experts.

It wasn't just the main Facebook apps going down, other services, including Facebook Workplace and the Oculus website were also down.

I am not familiar with that one.
It's a free text service basically which allows you to text, chat, video & voice calls, . which you can either use from your phone or from your computer to chat to anyone anywhere for free...

Just looked and it seems that altho' FB is back on now WhatsApp is not.. nor is Instagram...so it's not my phone or computer which has a problem , it's that WhatsApp still isn't up and running yet..

Big social media is still in big trouble: Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and Facebook Messenger experienced widespread outages Monday morning, and many users around the world can't use some of the most popular sites – Facebook's services. While this isn't unknown, the length of the outage, spanning over four hours at the time of this writing, is very rare – and it's not clear when they'll be fully back online.

Facebook.com seems to be coming back for some users, which started with the company's Newsroom and seems to be extending to the full site and social network. But Instagram and other services remain down.

DownDetector – a website that tracks outages of online services – had shown that all services were struggling in many territories. There had also been reports that services with accounts tied to Facebook logins, like Airbnb and Strava, are not working.

There's currently no way to avoid the issues, so you'll just have to wait until they've been solved to reconnect to WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook. The company claims it has been working on a fix, though it's unclear when they'll be resolved or which will be fixed first.

Facebook sites may be starting to come back online – users can access Facebook Newsroom, which is likely where we'll hear about the outage from the company itself soon – but as of this writing, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other major services remain down.
