The Cavendish banana, the one mostly eaten today after the old variety was killed off by disease, gets its name from the Duke of Devonshire of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.
Paxton, his head gardener, became fascinated by tropical plants, came across an imported specimen of this dwarf banana, & developed it in the glass houses he & engineers had built on the Chatsworth estate. The family name of the Dukes of Devonshire is Cavendish.
