Fancy Pet Foods ?

I've had cats most of my life and they all lived to be in their late teens. They've been eating regular old cat food-not the real cheap stuff, but the regular brands. I've been seeing on TV about all these "real' cat foods. I bought a SMALL $12 bag of the "real" stuff. My cat looked at me like I gave it a plate of steel wrenches. $12 down the drain.
What do you think about these new expensive "real" pet foods?

Once a vet said I should feed my cats a "special diet" (good for liver and kidney function) which he just happened to have to sell. It was like $6 for a 6 oz. can (this was back in the 1980s). It was VERY firm and none of my cats would eat it. I brought the unopened cans back, but the vet wouldn't take it back or refund any money. I wonder if it was worth it to him to lose my business - at that time we had 11 cats.

The cat I have now only eats Friskies that are fish flavored (Mariner's Catch, Sea Captian's Choice, Classic Seafood, Tuna & Whitefish and Flaked Tuna with Egg). Detests 9 Lives and store brands.

What do you mean by "fancy", Fuzzy? If you mean adequate protein and ingredients beneficial to cats, I don't call that "fancy, I call it appropriate. Sounds like you've been choosing the right stuff.

I stay away from any vet or any kind of doctor that sells supplements, foods, tonics or vitamins and would never believe that I or my pet needs these items simply on this doctor's say so. C'mon, now.

No cats here, but many people in the small critter communities I belong to often say you MUST feed one of a couple more expensive store bought brands. I got the expensive brands for my rats, and they refused to eat it. The food was almost $18 for a 3 lb bag. So I said, heck with this. Started buying them a brand at half the price, still has vitamins and nutrients. They LOVE it and there is very little waste. No where near as much waste as with the expensive brands.

I've always tried to buy better foods for my cats. Right now my cats do eat a low allergen brand I buy at the vet due to my tabby's fish allergy. It comes to well over 50 dollars a bag. That lasts about 3 months.

I started them on a can treat a day when they were kittens. Fancy Feast. No big deal in cost. Now of coarse they are on Wilderness at about 1.35 a can when not on sale. It's fish free. I just can't pull the can from them.

Even when I semi retire or retire, my cats will come first and I'll try to do the best for them I can.

Kitties, may I ask if it is the same vet who sells the cat food that told you your cat is allergic to fish? Just curious.
Hi RadishRose,
I actually figured this out myself with internet search. I found a thread regarding fish allergies on a cat forum which had a lot of information. My cat was getting ulcers on her mouth. Since eating low allergen she has not got one and it's been a few years now. I told the vet I thought she was allergic to fish and I think I may have been right. They will be 6 in April.

I feed my cat Blue Buffalo dry cat food freely, the weight management and indoor cat hairball formula since he has very thick medium length fur. Plus daily he gets 1/3 of a can of wet food like Wellness Chicken, Avoderm chicken, Natural Balance, etc. I fed him a free sample of the cheaper Purina food when he was a kitten, but I prefer to give him the better brands with healthier ingredients. Thankfully my cat has no allergies or illnesses that demand a special diet.

I've had cats most of my life-for a time, even when I was in the Navy. I guess I had good luck with my pets, none of them had any allergies. I bought a bag of Ray's cat food. I expected Fuzzy to rip into it. Like I said, he just looked at it and then at me. Where's the food? So I figured I'd add it to his Friskies. He growled at me when I did. Fuzzy just passed his 17th birthday. So if it ain't broke why fix it.

BTW. That is Fuzzybuddy.
