Last night I listened to a disturbing show on Coast radio, the guest was William Scott. Both Scott and his son had excellent reputations in both their civilian and military lives. Scott's son was unjustly shot and killed by the police in Las Vegas, when they thought the Blackberry he was holding was his concealed carry gun, that was still in its holster. He carried the gun because his job to check people's pacemakers in their homes brought him to some rough neighborhoods.
To make matters worse, they managed to destroy video evidence from the Costco store where the murder took place. Also, after witnesses saw him being put into the ambulance after being pelted with bullets, they removed the gun from his holster and planted it at the scene. The internal investigation was also fixed, to protect the officer.
Scott's son had a legal concealed carry permit, and was shopping at a Costco with his girlfriend. Someone spotted the gun in the holster and reported it to Costco management. Although no signs were posted in the store, the manager told him they had a no gun policy. Scott's son said he would be leaving in a few minutes, and the conversation ended on a positive note.
However, a store detective decided to call the police and report the customer with the gun. He falsely alleged that the customer was acting erratically. They decided to have everyone exit the store. Scott's son and his girlfriend, without even knowing what was up, left with the others. Outside, when a cop saw a Blackberry in the son's hand, he shot to kill, saying he thought it was a gun. More bullets followed.
Scott and his son were patriotic Americans, and pro-police, they had no animosity for the force whatsoever. But after Scott's son was murdered, he began to investigate what goes on behind the scenes and is hoping to make some changes in law enforcement and the justice system that will make things better and safer for the majority of good cops in the force, and innocent citizens that are being killed more and more often.
He says that most of the murders are by young cops who just got out of the police academy. Scott says there needs to be changes in the way they are trained there. What used to be instruction to serve and protect, has now become it's you against them, everyone is out to get you. Very similar to military training at wartime.
These rookies hit the streets in a very different state of mind than the older officers in the force. They don't hesitate to shoot, because they are guaranteed that being judged by a jury of 12 who are going to find them innocent, is better than being carried in a casket by a team of 6. Jurors have admitted that they knew all along that the witnesses and questions involved in cases were hand-picked, but with following the instructions they were given, they had no choice but to find the officer involved innocent.
He said that when the airlines had a lot of accidents, they put into place a plan. Anyone could anonymously report a pilot who was doing something dangerous, without his peers finding out. An external investigation took place and they resolved the issues. He suggested that the police department do the same, something similar has been done in Wisconsin, and is working well.
Good policemen on the force are scared stiff, and do not like what's been going on either. They know that the more people cops kill for no reason, the more angry citizens will become and continue to randomly kill cops...innocent, good cops, not the bad ones. Both police and government fear a civil war if these issues with the police are not resolved. http://williambscott.com/blog/
